    Care to elaborate?

Work crews are shown as a set of icons at the building they work at. Staffed positions fill in from the left side, and show the sprite for that worker. Empty slots are on the right, and are grayed out.

If you click on an empty position, that one and all positions to the right get a red X on them, showing that those positions will not be filled. Very simple and intuitive.

If the folks at Gaslamp are not familiar with the Tropico series, it's absoutely worth a look - Tropico 3 and 4 are probably the most useful. Lots of good UI and display ideas that would fit into CE.

Huh, interesting... and yes, I need to grab Tropico 4 at some point and spend some time with it.

  4. /define "nearby". Entire screen, half a screen, what happens if I build a mine in a place far away from surface ore nodes? Because I assume that if I built a mine next to a cluster of, let's say, coal and malachite nodes, the miners will retrieve coal and malachite. But, there's another question: would they be able to randomly find other things in that mine (not counting strange artifacts)?

They do, though its unpredictable; putting a mine next to hematite and malachite, for example, I've also got healthy amounts of clay and even sand as other products.

Yeah, mines will have some basic products (stone, sand, clay) based on where on the map they're built. Sand near the beach, stone more inland, clay in the middle. On top of that, the mine will search for whatever mineralogy points are nearby and add those to the list of products (and I'll probably weight it even more heavily toward ores vs. base products).

  7. Well, duh. With that, I was thinking whether there would be a possibility to mark places where the surface deposits were, in case you mine everything on the ground and want to go deeper.

Any idea what to consider "nearby"?
