Hello, first post here as a question. I do not have a Steam account, and I wanted to know how this game plays with that regards. You see I dont have internet access at home, so I am planning on buying this game, but I need to be able to play offline, is that possible with Steam, or should I buy it from the other site Desura? Any help would be appreciated, and sorry if this is a bad place to post this question, I am not familiar with Steam, Thanks and looking forward to this game!
You can play most steam games offline. After logging onto steam and updating games, you can go into offline mode. As long as you don't shut down your computer, you can play in offline mode. Even if you do shutdown your computer, you can start back up in offline mode, but after a while, it will want you to re-authenticate on steam (no idea how often or when with regard to this).
You can always play DoD, even if you download it from Steam. Just ignore the Steam shortcut and navigate to C:/Program Files/Steam/Steamapps/Common/Dungeons of Dredmor and start the Dungeons of Dredmor.exe file directly.
That is an awesome trick if it works (I dont doubt you, just havent tried it yet) I broke down and got the game because after watching the WTF... Dungeons of Dredmor video on youtube, I just had to fingers crossed that it worked without a connection. What I did, and maybe its helpful to others, was I created a steam.cfg file with 2 lines of code in it (found off a diff. site Reddit) by MoXria By creating/editing steam.cfg (in the same directory as the steam executable) with the following lines works: BootStrapperInhibitAll=enable ForceOfflineMode=enable I just tested it and worked Note: NOT a Steam.cfg.txt file! has to be a CFG file in the steam main directory. I then exited the steam client, burned the entire steam directory to DVD (since DL'n the steam client would also suck over dial up) and placed it on my home comp, opened the steam app, it is permanently in offline mode with no chance to recover, in fact until I delete that steam.cfg file it will never connect again. I was looking for my post here, thought it got deleted since it was unrelated to the thread I posted in, so I didnt see these replies, but thanks to both of you, and glad it all works
BTW, if you know off the top of your head, if I just make a shortcut to the actual game EXE and not steam.exe will it recognize achievements the next time I open Steam, or does Steam have to be running in the tray? I may bypass Steam after all, but right now its fun to see those achievements because they are HILARIOUS!!!
That's a good point -- if you bypass the Steam game startup, you don't get the achievements, even if Steam is running in the background.
