I really want to like this game, but crashes and bugs are preventing me

I just lost 2 hours after losing an hour after losing 3 hours and I can't get past level 1 let alone any other level.

Honestly, are you all saving this game every 5 minutes?

I longingly look at the posts where people are progressing past level 1, and I don't know how you are doing it without losing a character, corrupted save, or just plain crashing.

This game is so full of promise, but I am not being paid to be a beta-tester.

    Sigh

From what I see, you don't save at all, and it could be much easier for you if you saved every, let's say, hour. And it's not like crashes happen at random, either - they happen when a part of game's script goes south instead of doing its intended function, and it can easily be traced if you bother to do so (and actually doing that and reporting what goes bad would be much more beneficial for you, as developers can't fix bugs if they don't know what bugs are there, which they won't be able to find if nobody tells them). Besides, what affects the game too is the OS your computer is running, the amount of RAM you have on board, your graphic card and its drivers, and many different things, most of which majority of players never give a darn about, blaming the game instead.

And just to give you a full answer - my DoD crashed on me during normal gameplay thrice. Once on 4th or 5th floor, due to a faulty recipe I got at random that is currently being fixed by developers. And twice during monster zoo onslaught. And I never save the game manually unless I have to leave. Because I don't care about bugs that rare.

Also, no, you aren't being a beta-tester. This game is currently not in beta, and believe me when I say that it's not buggy enough to even be considered one (by a long run). And you aren't being paid, which, considering the overall helpfulness of your post as a bug report, is good (it is not supposed to be sarcastic or mean, mind you, it's just that the least you should've done when complaining about bugs is stating your game's version [and any DLCs and mods you are using] as well as your OS; if you don't do that, then your bug report is pretty much useless and only takes space).

Well, right now there's only one reproducible crash in game; when you find a wand recipe on a bookshelf and you hover over the dimensional lathe (already fixed for the next patch). Perhaps you can tell us what you're doing when it crashes?

I'm sorry it's happening to you, and they're trying to get rid of the "random" ones as well.

All I can tell you was that I was walking. I had selected a square perhaps 1/2 the screen away and my character was simply walking to that square.

    ~Sigh~

What is the version of DoD [Dungeons of Dredmor] you are using?
Do you have the RotDG [Realm of the Diggle Gods] DLC [DownLoadable Content pack]?
Are you using any DoD game mods, and if yes, then which ones?
What kind of OS is your computer running [Windows/Linux/OS-X]?

That is all you can tell us, and this would be of much help as knowledge of these things is invaluable to people who are trying to fix bugs inside of DoD (because some only happen on certain operating systems, or with particular mod, or with/without RotDG).

There seems to be a crash relating to spell mines (i posted a crash dump in the bugs forum, but thought it was leveling related then) ... it's not 100% reproducable, but it does happen extremely frequently. I save pretty much every time I open a door as well as frequently mid-zoo or other large fights.

There was one play through I did recently with a promethean build that it was literally crashing even 10 mins or so. I did beat Dredmor on that play through, but it involved significant amount of swearing and took a lot longer than it should have done. Currently playing through with a necro and it doesn't crash quite as often, maybe every 30 mins to an hour.

So yeh, it's frustrating and at times feels like it's unplayable. I certainly wouldn't want to play a permadeath character til the crashes are fixed. However, Gaslamp have shown themselves to be pretty good about fixing stuff relatively quickly so I for one am willing to cut them some slack ;)

according to their weblog they were suppose to be releasing stability patches last week, something is holding them up.

I cut the developers plenty of slack over the holidays, eventually a hotfix was posted and I was able to install it (OSX Lion via Steam) and everything was great. Then Rev B was released and I'm back to crashing with every save game load. I seem to be in the minority, based on the lack of response to my posts. Any Mac users out there able to load saved games dating from the hotfix now that 1.09 B is up? I can't justify investing more time and money in this right now.

  9. Odd... the only crashes I've had at all were related to mod compatibility. With two exceptions... one was fixed (no recipes for the lathe) and the other doesn't cause crashes anymore though the bug itself isn't fixed (gaining two or more levels simultaneously).

Yeah. I haven't had any crashes lately at all. It has been super fun. I am on windows though. Hopefully they get it all sorted out for you guys. I am up to 110 hours on steam.

thanks for the good wishes - I check in once or twice a week to see if I can play my character, get the crash and go back to useful life: I guess the developers are doing me a favor!

Have you tried deleting local content except for you save and letting steam re-update the files?

Ah yes, That one clears a whole host of issues at times.

Especially if he manually installed a hotfix, mine had issues after that updating from steam. So once I deleted the files it updated correctly.

thanks - sounds like good advice - of course it will not be plain sailing, "You can't open the application dungeons of dredmor.app because it may be damaged or incomplete." after following instructions on how to remove and refresh Steam files

Back up any saved game files from your my games folder, and then choose the delete local content option in steam. This will uninstall the game, and then when you click to play it the next time it will re-install and will then guarentee that all files are up-to-date

for those of you keeping score at home, followed advice above, backed up games, deleted local content (right click on name of game if, like me, you never did this before), reinstalled game, loaded save, crashed! OSX Lion is cursed I tell you!

rebooted Mac and was able to load a recent save - trying to load the pre-patch save crashed the app
