What exactly is corruption? I've either not made it far enough, or on the right skill to encounter this. I heard it's something Melee builds will encounter the most. I don't recall seeing it on my elvish easy run. On DM I'm only on DL 11.
ONLY on DL 11? Surprised you haven't encountered it, or maybe you have and you just haven't realized it. Corruption is basically just a random negative enchantment. It will give -1 to a random stat on your equipment. Magical items have a chance to resist it and not get corrupted. If something gets corrupted you'll see a floating text that says "Corruption" over your head. The reason why melee characters encounter this more is because some monsters (IE Magically golems) have a chance to corrupt equipment with their attacks.
Ah, thanks, that clears things up. I must have been lucky to not encounter it. I think I would notice the word 'corruption' above my head.
It's difficult to get it on this difficulty level because seldom a monster gets to you. But you'll start seeing it more often when you get to playing on Dwarven Moderation or Going Rogue.
Also, magic resistance can cancel out corruption, just like it can other effects attached to melee attacks. Also, note that corruption is a flavor term, not an actual mechanical term. To the game engine, there's no such thing as "corruption," there are just enchantments. Once a weapon is "corrupted" you'll see those negative stats when Krong displays your new weapon enchantment after placing it on his anvil. Likewise, if Krong curses your item it's the same thing as corruption, from the game engine's perspective. So if you have Flames of the Heckforge you can remove penalties from Krong, just like you could from other monsters. Edit: This is apparently untrue, which explains a lot of things I heard when I first joined the forums. Corruption typically comes from: Magicky Golems (DL 5), Blobs of Corruption (DL 10+), Corruption Fluid traps (varies depending on RNG and difficulty) and most if not all monsters with Slick in the name.
Specifically not true, Lorrelian. The game keeps track of Krong enchants (positive and negative) differently from other enchants -- and Flames of the Heckforge specifically does NOT remove negative Krong enchants. That's one reason why so few people take the last two levels of Demonology: Heckforge is often not worth the slim chance to turn into a demon at an inopportune moment.
Really? o_o Why does it show other enchants when I throw stuff on the alter then? I'm no expert, its true, but it seems like a lot of resources to eat up on keeping track of something that didn't matter until the expansion. Not that I'm doubting you, I'm sure you know the code for the game a lot better than I do. But this could be the reason the game slows down when I enter stores! RNG (while auditioning items to appear in store): So have any of you been cursed by Krong? Tome of Too Much Information: Well, way back when I was a little bitty boy, living in a box in the corner under the stairs of the basement half a block down from Jerry's bait shop, y'know the place... RNG: *facepalms* Please note that I am aware of the actual reason the game pauses when entering stores.
