For putting out such a great game, literally I've invested about as much time in this game as I have into Skyrim and that's a gigantic feat for an indie game. I can always come back to it, it's alway great, you have a great community and great fans because what you've made is just pure gold. I believe I speak for all of us when I thank you.
Yes, you do. Personally, I've put more time into this game than I put into Skyrim (that might have something to do with the fact that Skyrim is kind of expensive there and DoD has a nice price, so I have DoD but don't have Skyrim and only played for a few minutes at my friend's place to get a feel of it).
DoD blows Skyrim out of the water. Of course, I'm biased in favor of roguelikes and outstanding indie work in general, and biased against Bethesda and the Elder Scrolls series past Morrowind... I figure Project Odin is going to cement Gaslamp's place as a prime example of indie excellence.
I don't know, I actually like the open-world-grindy-as-all-hell TES series. And Minecraft, and a lot of other games that are too sandboxy for their own good. But that's because I just like sandboxy games (I like to do random stuff in games instead of being forced to follow some storyline), and I usually play them with so many mods (I think I had about 80 or 90 of them in Oblivion, plus the small ones I didn't pay attention to) that they barely resemble the base game. And yes, I too am waiting for Project Odin. Even if, by any chance, it happens to be something that doesn't suit my style of playing, because I think the price will be acceptable too, so why not try.
Oh, I love sandboxy stuff, I am just extremely disappointed with the way Bethesda has systematically dumbed down the series and taken a big fat poo-poo all over the lore. (I'm also a little bitter about their handling of the Fallout games after their acquisition of the license.) I absolutely love Minecraft, though I think I liked it a bit better pre-Adventure Patch in retrospect.
I still like TB's description of Oblivion/Skyrim as a 3-foot deep ocean. Broad as all hell, but no depth. And the combat... ugh. I'll stick to my Avernums and my Legend of Grimrocks and (of course) my Dungeons of Dredmor.
I love to hang on to the good old days - the first 2 Fallouts, Arcanum, Baldur's Gate and so on. High challenge, scads of story content, fun all around. I am looking seriously at Grimrock (as well as giving Torchlight a spin because omg I loved the Diablo games).
Yes, thank you Gaslamp for this wonderful game ! I haven't bought the expansion yet, but it's only a matter of time. I want to complete vanilla first, and I'm at something like 70 hours of gameplay, which, for such a low price, is really great. I'm looking forward to the next expansion ! It will give me a new goal, once I'll have got and finished RotDG. Plus, I may drop into modding one day. I already have some Minecraft experience into that, so yeah. Thanks again !
Grimrock does "old-school SSI Gold Box" dungeon crawl incredibly well. My only gripe with it is that the real-time combat and the clunky "try to click while using movement keys to avoid attacks" thing they have going on can lead to some incredibly frustrating combat. Of course, that's true to those games as well, but it doesn't keep me from Ragequitting the game every other floor (very temporarily, I can't stay mad at you Grimrock!) All in all though, there's enough dungeon there that their $15 price tag is more than reasonable IF YOU LIKE GRAPH PAPER FIRST PERSON DUNGEON CRAWLS. If you ever tried Shining in the Darkness or Dungeon Master or Might and Magic II (on the Genesis!) and hated it, you'll hate Grimrock as well. If you like any of those games, I strongly recommend it: it's well-balanced and the lighting engine they put together ratchets the immersion factor through the roof: the lighting comes in a huge variety of strengths and colors and keeps the dungeon from looking too same-y, even when they're using the same 8 dungeon wall textures over and over. The puzzles can also be a pain in the ass, but then I'm notorious for absolutely hating puzzles and mini-games in my RPGs, so you might very well like them. And even if not, GameBanshee.com already has a full walkthrough up if you get stuck on them.
I'm actually giving a try to TOME4 : Tales of Maj'Eyal. It's pretty good, really, and you can add your own texture packs. It looks like ADOM, but it's been simplified : no hunger, for example. It's very focused on fighting, but it's very interesting, with a few interesting mechanics.
I'm at something like 118 hours played, will eventually overcome my Skyrim time- no doubt. Grimrock is pretty cool, it will be outstanding when they release a devkit for modding.
Actually a better correlation for Legend of Grimrock is The Eye of the Beholder series rather than the SSI Gold box games as they had the top-down tactical fights. Though back on topic, yes a big thanks to Gaslamp, I was never a huge Rogue-like fan but actually enjoy Dungeons of Dredmore quite a bit (even when I do get frustrated at corruptions ).
