I'm relatively new on modding this game, just done a bit of poking around so far. Anyway, I have played a lot of Nethack over the years and i was thinking of trying to put in more cursed items like the loadstone. So far I haven't seen any way of doing it so I thought I would ask before moving farther. Is there currently any way to make a character unable to drop an item?
Darn, well maybe I can toss in some other things from the game along with with a few of my own ideas as a starter. Have to start off somewhere.
You could make a really nice looking weapon that has a really nasty proc that the description doesn't mention at all. The player could still just take it off when they notice, but it's as close as you're going to get to a curse item.
Some people *REALLY HATE* that sort of thing. Not to name anyone, but some people were very upset when a certain necklace started doing what it was supposed to do and teleporting them as a proc on hit. If you include such items without in game text informing them of it, please, please, *PLEASE* include a spoiler text file explaining exactly what does what so they will be able to cheat and see the negatives in advance.
Vague hints in the description are always preferred to outright telling players what will happen. Cases where attack scale to oddball stats, like in the Clockwork Knights skill line, is somewhat of an exception (though I think it could have been handled more smoothly but that's nitpicking). So in your necklace example, some flavor text like "When you're wearing this, you feel awfully jumpy" is better than "HEY IF YOU GET HIT YOU'LL TELEPORT BE CAREFUL" I hate to pull the "it's a roguelike" card, but, it's a roguelike. There are plenty of items with procs that I'll accidentally run into on Dredmorpedia that I never knew about before, and that's just lack of experimentation. That's the fun of it!
To be fair, this is a mod so if the description of the mod mentions a bit (I assume it would have both cursed and non cursed items) then it's fair game.
