Likely a double reference; the description text suggests the Little Red Book brought forcibly into conjunction with the above.

...Pity; there's always room for another nod to Doom (Episode 2 title).

That would be the Little Red Cookbook (which is also an Eddie Izzard reference, around 5:00).

Interesting -- I posted that and went back to playing the game, where the RNG promptly dropped the cookbook, which I hadn't seen before.

I'd still credit the black book as I said, just for the part about being something like "a collection of quotes from Lord Dredmor about daily life"; black rather than red because hey, it's necromancy.

The Silver Shield item line is probably a reference to the Heretic series, where a silver shield was the armor item.

I'm surprised there isn't a sword called "Mace of Doom".

This may be me not knowing the reference talking, but we already have Orcslasher, Slasher of Orcs, the best axe that was ever a sword. Do we really need a second intentionally miscategorized weapon?

We also have the Mace of Windu, which is more of a sword but is categorized under mace.

...Interpretive reference to Jedi Master Mace Windu, Samuel L Jackson's character in the Star Wars prequels; the only one to wield a purple lightsabre.

Hey, I was wondering, the No, you are the demons skill for the Demonology tree, it references Evil sitting on your couch.
Is that a reference to Darkseid seemingly always sitting on couches in DC comics?
Or is just my comic nerd building a bridge too far. :p

  10. I think it's more a general riff on the trope of someone crashing on your couch for way longer than expected.

While I'm here, the new achievements are ripe with references...

"And therefore, a witch!", the achievement for completing the Magical Law skill tree, is a reference to Monty Python and the Holy Grail, where someone successfully argues that a woman must be a witch if she weighs the same as a duck.
"The truth is way out there", the paranormal investigator achievement, is a reference to the x files.
"Hell is other diggles" and "paved with good intentions" are references to common sayings about hell - namely, "hell is other people", from Jean-Paul Sartre's No Exit, and "The road to hell is paved with good intentions", from I have no idea.
Finally, "Simon Belmont" is a reference to, well, Simon Belmont, a vampire slayer from various Castlevania games.

    That they are.

"And therefore, a witch!" is a reference to Monty Python, specifically "... and the Holy Grail", one scene of witch involves a rather poorly done witch trial.

Developers! Developers! Developers! takes its name from Steve Ballmer's rather infamous behaviour at a press conference (I forget which it was, was it E3?) in which he took to the stage and paced back and forth chanting "Developers!".

Faust perhaps takes its name from a "Faustian Pact", but I honestly don't know where that term comes from. Dante's Inferno?

Doctor Strangelove and its text are somewhat obvious references to the film of the same name (though I've, again, forgotten the full title.

Ugh, seriously? How about a book named "Faust", in which a man named Faust made a contract with the devil and later tried to get out of it?

Oh. Yeah, my knowledge of demonic literature is severely limited ;)

Yes! I had the first and last bits right in my head, but the middle I forgot.

Well, it's not really daemonic or anything, but it is quite a heavy book for a casual reading session, so I see why there are people unaware of its existence.

I don't think I've heard of it (oddly), but it may be simply that my brain is sludgified right now.

Depends. I remember that we had it in school as a part of literature class (we have learned as much about foreign literature as about that of ours).

I don't know about you guys, but the Pocket Dimension theme sounds a bit like the song from the End of Time in Chrono Trigger:

Now, if you excuse me, i'm going to sit around listening to the Pocket Dimension theme.
