I extremely hated NWN2 but that's because of how horrible the camera and UI was. I cannot stand a bad UI.
Maybe I'm just surprisingly patient, but I heartily enjoyed NWN2. The camera was a bit annoying, but it didn't ruin it for me.
It's been ages since the last time I played it but I do remember I generally preferred using Sorcery - and especially overusing Phantom Warriors. Casting them in battles allowed me to keep minimal defenses in most places and then just have a couple of big armies rampaging around. I really need to dig up the game to play it again... I usually played as the University, mostly because I'm such a technology addict in any Civ style games. My most memorable game was with Gaia though. I managed to beat University early on making them my vassal. Amusingly the University then ended up outgrowing me and became the most powerful faction in the game - mostly because I spent so much of the game in wars. It was great fun having such a powerful ally!
You have to be careful about allowing your vassal to get too strong, because it's possible for them to turn on you. I don't recall the circumstances that will cause that to happen, but I do remember it happening a couple of times. Sorcery is a solid, well-rounded school for sure. Only thing I don't like about phantom warriors is that they die easily. Though anything that can ignore armor is very cool.
My list: UFO: Enemy Unknown - Virgil Crosset was a commander whose stats wrapped around to a cripple. 'Nuff said. Arcanum - I was made for playing youu baaaaby Chrono Trigger - A japanese console RPG that kind of makes sense! Hooray! Well, FFVI is cool too. Quake 3 - best times shooting strangers over ze interbutt. Fallout 1, 3 and NV. I didn't like FO2 very much. Mass Effect 1 (2 is cool and better in some aspects but isn't as original - and doesn't have the Mako!. Haven't tried ME3) Super Metroid - don't need no friggin' jumpball. Megaman Zero - the cream of the GBA era Castlevania Symphony of the Night - I can totally picture Alucard duking it out with Samus. Have you noticed any patterns yet? Bejeweled 3 - I almost only play this on my NDS One Must Fall 2097 - I can still hear the menu music in my head. BLOODY ROAR 2 - You can turn into a werebeast and munch on your opponents neck - wtf more do you want?! This game can take a crap on Tekken, or just about any other 3D fighting game, perhaps with the exception Soul Blade and Soul Calibur II. Bloody Roar 3 is crap, Bloody Roar 4 is barely acceptable - Bloody Roar 2 is the real shit. And, of course, DORF FORTROZ. Because exceptional quality dragon tooth crowns encrusted with milk quartz round cabochons and with an image of Calmedspikes the Night Freak in pond turtle shell. Calmedspikes was laboring, and the artwork related to his settling in the Dune of Desolation, just in case you were wondering. I just made that on the spot you know.
I replied to my own post so the links are there for anyone interested. I have been playing the hell out of ToME. Let me offer some advice. Do not try to use more than a single or a few mods. You get memory holes and loading cannot finish until you CTRL+ALT+Delete and kill it from the Task Manager. Here are mods that are good. The Monk Mod for b42. Wyrmic Additions b42. Expanded Escorts b42. Those three work fine even together. The last one is the best of all since it keeps annoying escorts from running directly into doom. But you still need to protect them or they will still die. The other two are classes for you to play. Monk is nice, and the Wyrmic is better this way than it was by default. Here is one more addon that adds a class that is nice. It may be OP, but it is also broken. It gives you an error screen every time you use one of the abilities. You can just hit escape to close that however, but it gets more annoying than you could possibly fathom to do this every few turns for thousands of turns... Mage Knight b42 Finally here is one more that looks promising, but I have not tried it yet. My Solipsist is all but unkillable at this rate and a mage has less appeal due to that. But I may have to see what the details of the mage changes are at least. Archmage/Elementalist Split b42..
Oh, Arcanum. I wish you weren't so buggy and poorly balanced for casters. Someone really, really needs to remake it. The entire world and the characters are very memorable, but the system is kind of broken.
You're right. But that didn't deter me. I always preferred to play technologists though - My most cherished one, a half-ogre mechanicker. Intelligence is capped at 16 for half-ogres, which meant I always had to use technical manuals to craft the recipes, and use potions to boost his intelligence on level-up, to be able to assign the points to technical disciplines. Still, makes it all the more rewarding to unravel those bloody gnomes' breeding program. Gotta hate them. An intelligent half-ogre, clad in mechanized armor, commanding a small army of automatons. I can totally see the gnomes not wanting that.
Dunno if necroing or anything, but this so much. It was a very nice game in more regards than that. other ones I loved over the years Chaos Overlords Alpha Centauri Planscape Torment Fallout 1, not a big fan of 2, very much not a big fan of 3. I liked Daggerfall, and I liked Morrowind for completely separate reasons. Diablo one, but not 2. Heroes of might and magic 4 (the Equilibris mod edition ofc) Civilisation... eh, 4 I guess, even though I played a lot of the others. Prefer Alpha Centauri. DotA (and prefer evolution into HoN mechanics wise, although i'd gas most of the community) MtG: Shandalar (god that was fun) (anyone interested that got a very late modding/hacking community, google Manalink 2.0) Doom 1 First AvP Desktop Dungeons DoD, actually, i'd put here, will get better if it ever gets tweaked/modded to perfection but: Vampire the masqeurade bloodlines got a big playability boost from modders so did Temple of Elemental Evil The Witcher must be a couple I forgot
Yes, it was an awesome game. I played it for years and didn't manage to fully explore the ton of secrets it had... the scrap and destruction moves, secret upgrades, characters, arenas... OMF2097 had a crapton of gameplay that wasn't readily apparent. Cream of the nineties. Ohh, Chaos Overlords! It's a great game, made of awesome, but I grew a bit tired of it. It is also a great example of minimalist yet extremely rich fluff. The gangs and items gave depth by themselves to what's essentially a computer-aided tabletop game. Ground Zero, Gun Runners, Middlemen, Pyramid Healers, Grey Order, Used Car Salesmen... I can still remember them. I even introduced a weapon from Chaos Overlords into one of the roguelikes I'm developing Alpha centauri was pretty awesome too, and apparently has quite a following here. I always played university - network node for free in every city FUCK YEAH.
Alpha Centauri's a culturaly relevant artifact, IMO. The game itself coud really use a god up-to-dating, though. And the funny thing about OMF is how damned deep it was with just left-right-jump-duck and 2 attack buttons, if I remember correctly. It sort of killed the fighting games genre for me on the count of how badly everything else compared later. Sort of like how the marine campaign in the original AvP set the bar for creepy and adreneliney too high.
About the bolded part, I had a similar feeling, just not that extreme. OMF2097 controls are elegant in their simplicity (and understandability!) and the special moves required RESEARCH to figure out, without resorting to needlessly complex special gauges or weird systems as console 2D fighting games tend to: Exactly how many grades of "Jaguar Leap" are there? Three? What is the exact input difference between them? When you were starting to fill in those questions, Crystal or some chinese doctor would rape you with a mid-air jaguar leap, and leave you wondering what the fuck did just happen. I'm too much of a sissy for the marine campaign. I always played on the Alien side XD. I have a friend who nearly swears by that campaign, though.
I just said "sort of", and yeah - i didn't even know there were secret characters in the game for ages, and some of the char / character combinations made you reconsider what you thought you knew about the robots every so often. And the marine campaign in AvP 1. Ohhhh, boy... No save game, no proper vision, no ammo most of the time, and enemies in all imaginable shades and hues of "invisible instadeath". You know it's good if you can't spot the scripted events because you're to busy panicking... Awesome damned game, even the predator campaign got nasty when you started running out of ammo at lvl 3. If OMF was exceptional in it's genre, AvP was... very, very exceptional in its. Niche, roguelikey and all that, but it made other shooters look like dodgeball
Yeah, I still remember the thrill of getting to shoot triple guided concussion cannons with Jaguar in the campaign mode. I'd never have found everything by myself. I rarely played with anything but a Jaguar though. By the time I full game arrived I had already learned the Jaguar by heart and I could just never learn to fight as well with the other bots. (Except the Gargoyle, but that was just because the AI sucked at defending against it...) AvP was damn great as well. Plus it was simply hilarious to even watch in multiplayer. One or two marines trying to defend against several aliens running at full speed... non-stop panic and chaos!
Say lujo, can you elaborate on why you rate the Witcher? The discussion I've heard for it (offline) has been... less than complimentary.
The Witcher was a great game. Not at first, mind you. It turned into pure gold once they got the Enhanced Edition patch out though. The game initially seems dull and has complicated mechanics. But once you figure it all out it is amazing. Keep in mind you do not need to buy the Enhanced Edition to get that version. If you can get a deal on the original game, the patch to EE is free and makes it a whole new game in reality. The patch also removes all copy protection entirely, so it is good all around. But about why it is so good, I would say the story was well told and not the same twice through the game. (If you play a good guy once and an evil bastard the next, you get a whole new game. Ditto for different builds.) Another thing I love about it is that it is a PC exclusive. No shitty console porting happened until the second Witcher game. Some may see that as a bad thing, but I love PC over any console. To each their own.
Unless you live in Germany. In which case it is the *ONLY* ancestor since Wolfenstein 3D is *STILL* illegal there due to a massive case of denial. Otherwise you are entirely correct. And I loved them at the time. I recently tried replaying them, but I simply could not get past the lack of a z-axis. Some modern engines compensate, but the game allows you to shoot almost at the ceiling and hit anything within the range of the z-axis. Not to stir up politics, but I suspect half the people living in Germany have played it anyway. *Edit* I had Castle Wolfenstein linked in there due to my own idiocy... Fixed.
