I've been meaning to continue my saved characters but I can hardly go more than 15 minutes without getting carpal tunnel lol I thought of getting an Xbox controller but I want to ask here first if anyone had tried playing DoD on game controller and whether one had success getting all the key bindings to work properly?

The thought of trying to use a thumbstick to substitute mouse actions kinda makes me sick at my stomach. I can't, personally, see how that would add anything but frustration and tedium.

DoD doesn't have any gamepad support, possibly you could get something going with some third party program to control your cursor and bind stuff, but I don't recommend it.

Well, some people just got used to it.
I remember playing The Settlers on Amiga in the ancient past - one player used the mouse, and the other one used a joystick to substitute for it. Sure, you had to get used to it, but once you had it was actually pretty comfortable (not as much as using the mouse, but it was easily within "acceptable" levels).
And the same thing probably happened with gamepads. Considering how many various games of various types there are (RTS games? Check. Tactical RPGs? Check. FPS games? Check.), it's not surprising that some people would feel more comfortable with a gamepad because they just got used to doing various things with it. Personally I only do it for action games (including action/RPG platform games, for which I think using a gamepad is the best way to play), but then again I started with computers, and if someone else started with video game consoles I can see them wanting to use a gamepad to play DoD.

  5. I managed to hook my PSP and use it as a controller by using Xpadder, it force the use of a gamepad in almost any game, included Dredmor. It is highly customizable and you can map each button, hell, you can even use a button to switch between configurations.

Note: Xpadder works with any gamepad, I just used my PSP and made it pretend to be a gamepad because I do not have any other gamepad to use.

Now that you've mentioned it, I'll endorse Xpadder as well. I found a cheap Dualshock -> USB hub, so I used to use a playstation 2 controller for console games on the PC(I don't have an Xbox so I cant directly use one of those controllers). It's remarkably smooth when reading analog sticks and all that, and you can download templates for common controller setups.

I was probably a but blunt previously. I should have said, using a thumbstick for all the skill and inventory management seems like a hassle. Good luck to those who give it a shot, though.

I use a razor nostromo and I can't imagine not using it. It's wonderful.

Well i could recommend using motion joy and switching between mouse and controller, i don't like it to much personally
