I don't know how often I'll update or how long I'll keep the series going, but I just started a "Let's Play" over on YouTube. It's my first time doing something like this, where I try to commentate while playing, so I'm looking for feedback and suggestions on how to improve, both on how to play and how to produce the videos. I hope this is interesting to at least someone here, and I hope to see you over on YouTube. =)
I've uploaded two more parts of the series. Part 2, a rather long video where I finished clearing level 1 of the dungeon; And part 3, where I have a rather unfortunate encounter with a pocket dimension...
Not bad, only few things i can say is be more clear when doing commentary and don't be afraid to just talk about what you feel and think during your actions, best way to do that is to make yourself laugh a few times of camera and getting a feeling for commentaries, then belt it all out in your videos so they are immensly entertaining, look at my videos for good refference (link is my signature) and i'll keep en eye on ya And as always "take it easy" Ps- Keep it going man, never lose faith. and best tip, enjoy every part of the game during the recording! Liked your videos by the way
Hey guys. Haven't been back here for a while, real life has been keeping me occupied and prevented me from making and releasing as many videos as I've wanted to. There are more up on my channel if you want to take a look, though. However... I was just sitting down to record some more videos when I discovered that once again my save has mysteriously disappeared, which means my third run series will never be completed. My second run was stopped in the same way, after just one video, but I figured it was just a rare glitch. My third run was up to eight parts now (the last part uploading as I write this), and it feels really bad knowing I'll never be able to finish it. Is this a common problem? Is it normal for saves to disappear like this? I never had this problem before, but then I usually played until I died in one sitting before I started doing commentary, only very rarely quitting the game to continue later. Doing commentary is a lot more draining than just playing, though, so... If this is a common problem, I guess I'll have to quit doing DoD-videos, sadly. =(
It's not normal, but unfortunately can happen in the old version. Give the beta version a try. http://community.gaslampgames.com/threads/dredmor-1-1-3-beta-feedback-thread.5193/
Dealing with beta-versions of games (unless there are no other versions, like Path of Exile) is not something I'm too comfortable with. Most times I've done that I've come across more problems than solutions, which I guess is the nature of beta-versions. I checked out the actual location of the save-files on my disk, previously I had only looked at the load menu in-game, and it seems my save is still there. The game just can't read it for some reason. There's an auto-save as well, that the game can read, but when I try to load that it just sends me back to the starting screen. Files in the proper save folder are; level0-3.dat savegame.dat skill0-6.bmp thumbnail.bmp The autosave folder has an additional file called metadata.dat. Is there anything I can do here to "restore" access to my proper save? Are there files missing from these folders that explain why they don't work?
I asked Nicholas and he told me it should be fixed in the beta and that it's probably a Steam Cloud issue (sigh, we get so many of those). He suggests running the game with the -nocloud parameter (can put it in the steam launch options) and see if it changes anything.
Or just do like I do and never ever open Steam while playing DoD. the only reason I open Steam ever anymore is to use the mod publisher.
I don't have Steam Cloud enabled on DoD. I did briefly turn it on earlier, after I noticed my save was missing, but it's turned off again now. I just tried adding -nocloud anyway, but still nothing. Bah. =(
The "-nocloud" thing gives you nothing because Steam forces its cloud on DoD based on a value in DoD's config file. I don't know whether to blame Steam guys or Nicholas for that, but either way it's pretty counter-intuitive. That having been said, I reckon you simply ran DoD with that sort of command earlier and Steam simply still managed to eat your saves, instead of something more "serious" happening to them (they are nowhere to be found either way, though).
That's the thing, though; They're not actually nowhere to be found. They're right there! *points* Sitting on my harddrive, I can go look at the actual files whenever I want. The game just refuses to acknowledge them, or something. This wouldn't have been so frustrating if I wasn't recording the run, I guess.
There are two possibilities, then. Either something in the files got corrupted (weird and unlikely, but possible) for whatever reason or Steam cloud stole one of the many files comprising a game save (also not very likely, but I would be leaning towards that one).
Guess there's nothing I can do, then. I'll keep a backup of those files just in case, though. Because I'm an optimist. =P
