I like the game but steam sucks

Discussion in 'Dungeons of Dredmor General' started by deathknight1728, Mar 29, 2013.

  1. Yeah the title pretty much says it. Ive played this game on steam for my pc when it was working with the internet. Now it is not and I have it for my mac. The game plays horribly on the mac and my guess is that it is steam as that slows down everything on a computer.

Im actually getting further in the base game but I just can't/will not play anymore with the 3 minute wait time to load a game and wait even going from floors up and down. Its a great game but hopefully it will be available on other outlets like gog in the future. Ive had problems with steam in the past and this doesnt make things any better for them.

Its available from Desura; you can also play the game without steam, as the executable has no DRM.

Steam may not be the problem in this case; I vaguely recall dev words saying the save/load isn't as optimal as it could be.

More mods enabled and more dungeon levels visited means more time spent shuffling data around.

  4. Like I said I love the game but if I knew how to fix the slowness of loading, Id be really glad. Could leaving internet windows open cause slowness? I don't leave too many but I don't know much on computers. If anyone knows of a sure way to fix it even a little, it would be really good. Im a pretty picky gamer when it comes to liking an rpg, so the fact that I can't find one bad thing to say about this game, save this is a good sign :)

Any other programs that are running will slow the computer down for any other programs that are trying to run. Plus they will take up memory and may cause page swaps where they move parts of RAM to the Hard Drive and back again when they are needed. You might want to try running the game with nothing else running and see how it does. Also, be aware of any programs that run in the background but aren't showing up unless you need them. Many printers add programs that start whenever the computer starts up and for me don't do anything worth having them use up system resources. I usually set those so they don't run and then if I ever need them, I manually start them. I'm running Windows and have never used a Mac so I have no idea if you have anything like that or not or even how to keep them from running if you do. Usually, you can do a Google search to find out how to stop programs like that. I hope this helps in some way.

Optimization of any sort is just guessing unless you go off measured data. It's been years since I last looked at OSX, but I'd suggest starting with opening up the view of processes and what resources they're using, particularly CPU and disk bandwidth. Graphs over time can be useful as well.

Well-behaved applications will yield the CPU to other tasks when they don't have anything that needs doing, rather than burning CPU time doing nothing.

Also, from what I remember most Mac programs don't actually exit when you close their window; File-Quit (cmd-Q) is the convention to get them out of memory.

  7. Haha, funny stuff. I got rid of all the programs I had open and it actually did what you guys said. It turns out I had a few hidden programs I didnt even know of open, shows I need to improve my skills with a mac. The game ran fine after that. Thanks for the tips!
