I got one of these items from completing a monster zoo. It replaced one of the other items which I got from a quest. The other ones came from evil chests a floor above (luckiest dwarf post ever: 3/3). Guess which one is which! Then, guess why some serious balancing has to be done.
Gaslamp already has had the intention of nerfing Evil Chests, but I don't know what happened to that.
I picked evil chests, but I actually get good items also via stealing, plus one method you did not mention: Mysterious Portals. It's not foolproof, and more often than not, I die in the attempt. But if I have the right skills, I've gotten some really great items in that way. It's worth the risk if I have the right skills from the start (I am one of the few people who believe that it's better to use the portal when you are low level, since you have less to lose from dying).
My main source of Weapons are from Arms dealers(that's why I picked terrorists). I get some of the best weapons from Evil Chests, Buying from Brax(Unlike him, I'm an honest businessman, so I don't steal from him), and most of all: Uber chests(not listed). If you're shield bearer+unarmed, you'll find weapons mostly useless, and that's what Evil chests tend to favour. As for picking God, I picked it because sometimes the RNG God favours you. I wonder which god would win: RNG God or Krong? PS: You forgot to add Uber chests and Monster Zoos as an option.
Yeah, I forgot a couple methods of gear-find. Uber chests are good, but so rare that I completely forgot them (possibly an effect of mostly playing NTTG) and even though I have the Wizardlands expansion I find that going in any portal generally results in either a) my death or 6) outdated loot. So I kind of stopped bothering with them. You can also OCCASIONALLY buy or steal something good, but usually by the time I have the skills or the money to do so I've found something better. Again, I usually play on NTTG so I only get 0-1 shop per level as opposed to 3, but I usually only find 1 or 2 items worth hanging on to from the shops. I can sometimes find better placeholding gear there and use it for a level or 2, but mostly they contain junk.
Those 2 extra Brax Shops make a huge difference. NTTG is about 60% of the Dungeon with 33% of the Shops, which would make Brax more useful if you didn't play NTTG. If you can pull 2-4 hours on Dredmor a Day then there's no need for NTTG.
For general usability, yeah, they are. If you get a good roll on the bonus stats they can be really helpful for the next few floors, so with a bit of luck you can get some happiness from a shrine on a lower floor.
Unless I'm using burglary I don't much care about the shops. They occasionally have decent stuff, but I prefer to be able to make 4 runs and test 4 builds than to make 1 run in the same amount of time. I also sometimes play normally if I'm running a crafter. No, no they're not. I have (since learning how it works i.e. get 500 fisk first) found 1 useful item from the god. Until I gave up on it due to this waste of timeyness I usually got minimum 3 fully-charged things. So lets say a ration of 150:1 useless:useful. It doesn't seem worth the effort.
Before you say something stupid, think. You just implied that you can't get any useful items from it, "ever", and used the fact that you only got one useful item from it as an argument. Which means that what you used as a proof invalidated your own argument. And your further words about how it is a "150:1" ratio (a note of importance, you wanted to use "ratio" and not "ration") further serves as proof of the fact that your initial words on the topic ("No, no they're not") are not true and that you either are too tired to notice it or that you don't know how "logic" works. Yes, it is possible to get a useful item that way. No, it is not easy nor is it likely. But yes, it can happen if you get lucky.
The only thing is you're likely to get something which doesn't fit your build... while an evil weapon fits any build with an, at worst, 1/7 chance.
Evil Chests only give weapons, but seem to rarely ever give daggers, crossbows or polearms. I've seen tonnes of Evil Chest Axes, Maces and Swords in it's place.
Yes, but in the first place the whole mini-argument was about whether it was possible or impossible to get anything useful that way. And "unlikely" still belongs to "possible" even if it's not something you want to rely on.
If evil chests are nerfed, lets hope they buff some or all of the other sources. Lutefisk and Zoos in particular are notoriously bad. Evil chests could just be nerfed by giving them chances to drop other things than weapons.
Your statement was that they were "good" "for general useability". I stated they weren't. I didn't say that it was impossible to get something good from them, just that they weren't a good way to get one. If you're going to talk about logic, I suggest you look into the semantics of your own arguments first. I didn't use the word (which you put in quotes) 'ever'. I gave a ratio of useful fisks to useless fisks which was highly skewed towards the useless and said I gave up on it. My assertion was that they were mostly worthless, not infinitely worthless.
And on the other hand, I wasn't talking about the specific examples but rather about the "can" or "can not" thing. Can we just admit that we both misunderstood what the other person meant, say that I am sorry for the aggressiveness of my post, and pretend it did not happen (not "at all" but rather "as a part of discussion about items and chances")? I'm usually being better than that in my behaviour, it was a rather tiresome period when I wrote it but it is not an excuse - thus, I'm sorry about lashing at you.
