This is rather frighteningly coincidental. I was just reading an article on Lifehacker about shaving with safety razors and someone in the forums recommended a barber shave and I shivered. I would never let another person near my face with a razor and said as much, and now I know for a fact I would never let these barbers anywhere near my house with a razor or anything else. Run! RUN!

(I've also noticed that when David writes the weekly reports, I tend to say "run!" a lot. Interesting...)

There are reports that after doctors were forbidden from creating castrati (males prevented from reaching puberty so they could sing Soprano as adults...), barbers secretly performed the operations for a while. (some parents wanted a child with a profitable singing career more than they wanted grandkids, so they'd pay the barber to "accidentally"...yeah)

Hooopefully the CE barbers will stick to Leeches :savvy:

Well, if you want some more "barber fun", the white-red spiral that represents barbers came to be as a result of barbers being the people you also went to when you wanted to rid yourself of some of your blood. And not in a "oops, it was an accident during shaving" way, but rather by deliberately cutting you a bit and letting you bleed for a while.

Myself, I actually managed to use a barber's services a few times and still get out of it alive. But it still made me sit still like a rock every time in fear of getting cut.

Nah, straight-edge razor shaves - really good ones, done with the hot towels and the lather and the full business in the chair - are the business. Also very good for you if you suffer from beard burn or ingrown hairs when shaving.

Yes, they are. But if you were a kid who was barely 18 or 19 and who went to a barber for the first time, you would have been nervous.

Of course, that was a long time ago for me, and right now it sort of is a fond memory.

I believe it's actually more barbers were also surgeons, not so much blood-letters.

You can believe what you want in this case, Althea. They were also blood-letters, it is just that this often gets grouped with "surgeon stuff" and unvoiced because not everyone likes details of this sort. That, and since bloodletting is "ancient medicine" it's easy to see why would people group it with the other medical stuff.

PS. No, I am not trying to be an ass here. I simply checked it beforehand and know that they were, and you are free to think otherwise if you have a reason for that. That, and I'm probably tired.

Its less that they were "WE ARE EXPLICITLY BLOOD LETTERS GUYS ITS ALL WE DO" its more that it was a part of the other duties they offered as, effectively, really shitty surgeons.

What mining said. Blood-letting was part of that era of medicine, that's undeniable, but they were referred to as "barber-surgeons" for a reason.

After all, Kaz, all you mentioned was the blood-letting.

Yeah, all I mentioned was blood-letting. Because this is the exact part of "medicine" that came to be represented by the white-red spiral. But it is doubtless that even though this is the act which made their signs look the way they do, the signs in question were meant to represent all of the "medicine" they performed in addition to what one would nowadays expect from a barber, and not just blood-letting.

Ugh, sorry if I failed to make that particular bit clear before. As I said, I'm quite tired now (and it's not the "I haven't slept well today" sort but rather the "so many days of work in a row, when will this end?" kind) and sometimes stuff like that happens. And I hope you aren't angry because of it or anything of this sort.

I have to admit I didn't. But then again, I do have my excuse of being tired and overworked today (and for the next four days, with the likely possibility of resting sufficiently after that).

Thus, thank you for posting that.

Does this mean I'm *not* getting quality purses at discount prices?

No sir Nicholas, you are not.

But look at it from the other direction - at least you won't fill your closets with garbage now.

I agree, they are awesome (in a way).

Just saying this, since I'm trying to do everything at once now and thus any jokes I could make would probably explode.
