Last night someone was asking me lots of questions regarding crafting. I wanted to point him at one of the Steam guides, but noticed that there wasn't one. So I stayed up late making one. I may have been quite tired by the end, so be gentle. http://steamcommunity.com/app/98800/discussions/0/846959998102613992/ Please keep in mind that this is my first pass at the guide, so any suggestions, corrections, etc. would be welcome. I wanted to have more of a description of instabilities, but could not find a definitive list of them (or even a partial list). If anyone knows where I should look, let me know.
That about covers everything. I would change the wording of the tinkering entry at the start; it implies to me that tinkering is only good for ranged crafting if you have the crossbow skill (which I never take). I'd say something like "tinkering synergizes well with archery, but is still very useful for reliable ranged damage on its own."
I reread what I wrote -- I'll see if I can make that clearer. I have had other conversations with people explaining that everyone, not just those with the crossbow skill, ought to be concerned with getting the best crossbow and bolts that they can get their hands on. I don't actually think I contradict that here, but I guess I can do better. This is what you read originally: Do you think that this wording is better?
I like it. Thumbs up, seal of approval! That was the only thing that really stood out to me, so the guide's in great shape, otherwise. I have a friend who's fairly new to the game and hasn't done much, I'll have him take a look at it for a newby's perspective and see what he thinks.
For a list of instabilities, they're all listed at the beginning of the encrustdb.xml file in the expansion3 directory: Code: <unstableEffect name="Exploder" spell="Grenade Self" /> <unstableEffect name="Missing" spell="Easy Target Instability" /> <unstableEffect name="Necromanticula" spell="Necropain" /> <unstableEffect name="Tentacles" spell="Tentacular Self-doom" /> <unstableEffect name="Twitchiness" spell="Froda's Jump Discontinuity" /> <unstableEffect name="Impoisoning" spell="Terrible Poison" /> <unstableEffect name="Weakening" spell="Curse of Weakness" /> <unstableEffect name="Sucker" spell="Easy Target Sucker Curse" /> <unstableEffect name="Sanguinous Misappropriation" spell="Blood Debt" /> <unstableEffect name="Foul Lich-magic" spell="Haematic Drain" /> <unstableEffect name="Immolation" spell="Pyromatic Implosion" /> <unstableEffect name="Darkening" spell="Self Darkened Vision" /> <unstableEffect name="Seeing What Should Not Be Seen" spell="Necromantic Blinding" /> <unstableEffect name="Thaumoentropic Vexation" spell="Greater Necrodrain" /> <unstableEffect name="Draining" spell="Necrodrain" /> <unstableEffect name="Hunger" spell="Hungry Hero" /> Some of those spells aren't entirely obvious but you can look them up in the spelldb files.
You should note also that sometimes the recipes are deceptive: tinkering's boltcrafting, for instance, spits out more bolts and of upgraded quality depending upon your . Having at least 1 or will make ores into ingots spit out two ingots per ore instead of one. 2 and 1/ means one hematite presses into two ingots, which grind into four rusts, which alchemize into eight healing potions.
I do specifically give examples of bolt crafting and say precisely what you said regarding ingots in the 'Special Cases' section. I didn't give any examples with regards to alchemy, but I can do that. I did generally say that having greater skill can give you more and/or better items.
