The icons are a fixed and fairly visible size -- I'll never impose 16x16 icons on you guys ever again. Might bump 'em up. They're tiny in the shots because I keep resizing the screencaps I take to fit the blog post.

And yeah, if I provide a full-scale screenshot to show some random small piece of game and it's not well composed, a news site might pick that up and be like "THIS IS CLOCKWORK EMPIRES! THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE!" and then we're like, "Ugh, no!" and so on.

    Thanks, that does make sense.

But what is the emotion that lady is currently showing? Sleep?

    Oh! Hunger.

It's a loaf of bread being cut by a knife. You can generally tell when it's full-sized (but I'll probably redraw the damn thing anyway because it's not crystal-clear.)

ah-ha! I thought it might be a loaf of bread (and said as much) but I'll agree with you David...at low resolution it's very hard to tell what it is.

    You know, I'm wondering...

Would it be possible to have alternate icons for these statuses? Like having a few icons for hunger which would be randomly chosen ("my hunger does not equal your hunger", or something of this sort); the ability to add alternate icons on its own would be a great addition and I'm not demanding that you make all the alternate icons, though if you happen to like making them for whatever reason...

Speaking personally, and with the caveat that I'm not the one designing it, I feel like having multiple icons for the same emotion would be confusing unless they had clear distinctions. The point is that they be readable when you're busy doing something else, after all.

Are there plans to make the emotion tags animated? like the bread being cut with a knife, or someone who is angry having smoke come out of their ears? Or a club hitting a baby seal (if they are feeling violent).

One way that I have seen done in other games (can't think of them off the top of my head) is that they use the same "type" of icon just with varying degrees. For instance, the hunger bread could be smaller if they're only slightly hungry, but huge and pulsating with a skull if they're starving to death.

Different kinds of cravings. 20 tons of surplus grain but Germaine would rather whine for cooked pork and die than have some lousy bread, dammit. WELL I HOPE YOU SUFFER GERMAINE, YOU'RE NOT GETTING ANY PORK

Which is why I suggest the possibility of it with the caveat that by default there will only be one icon. Some people would be delighted by the possibility of making it more difficult and confusing due to icon variety, some not so much.

And of course it would not be as confusing if it was all thematically-related. If I see an icon with a loaf of bread I will know that the citizen whose icon it is is hungry; but if I see an icon with a piece of cheese, I'm going to assume the same thing and not—for example—that a nearby poet has stinky feet. And due to variety it would take longer for people to get bored/annoyed at their colonists for spawning the same icons all the time (though if all the citizens are spawning the "hungry" icon all the time, the player probably sucks).

I mean, it is your game and all, but unless you are vehemently against it I think it is something worth considering.

That actually makes a lot of sense!

EDIT: I didn't mean for that to sound so surprised :p

  12. There's a very fine line between whats detailed and clunky and whats detailed and easy to understand. Maybe in the case of starving to death the villagers would look weak, hunched over, and such. That might just be extra complexity though so theres always the option of making the icon larger if the problem is more pressing.

Having a lot of icons representing the same thing might be fun but I would think not a great use of time and resources. I'd rather have that time put into adding more features into the game.

I don´t know much about these things but implementing more icons wouldn´t take more than a few hours, would it?

David has basically mastered the zen of drawing millions of tiny icons after doing literally every item and stat icon in Dredmor.
