I took a long break from the beta, and it's awesome to see how much it's improved in the meantime. Having a blast with it again.
Yeah Desktop Dungeons, I remember playing that a long time ago... At first sight those graphics appealed more to me.
It looks interesting but it's the second most expensive game of its type that I've seen (most expensive being the upcoming Adventure Time game), and I'm really not sure I can justify spending SO much on it. By 'it' I mean the Special Edition (w/ OST, extra char, etc.)
I bought DD as well (skipped the OST) and am enjoying it quite a lot. I played the original free one before.
On the recommendation of a friend, I picked up a silly little game called "Long Live the Queen". It's kind of a life simulator that reminded me a little of a game I played a couple of years back, "Academagia". You are playing the role of a princess who has to attend classes, and deal with all sorts of questions and events and choices that arise. Depending on what skills you have when things happen (based on what classes you've been attending) it will determine how events transpire. It's good for a laugh -- nothing really deep or complex about it. It's a lot simpler than, Academagia, for example, and lacks that games walls of text. But it's also extremely easy to end up dead.
I am again playing Fallout 3 with a boatload of mods. I notice I have one or more incorrectly installed since the only way to determine what grenade I have selected in FWE is to attempt to throw one. But everything is working and I am not going to bother trying in vain to fix this at the cost of all my current progress. (Changing even trivial things with mods tends to break saves in the Gamebryo Engine.) I am currently trying to decide which DLC to attempt first... Probably Operation Anchorage. But it could be Point Lookout or Mothership Zeta too. The Pitt is very unlikely to even be played by me.
I still can't play Fallout 3, much like I still can't play Oblivion. This is not meant to spark a flame war of any kind, but just an observation. I tried to play FO:3 (and Oblivion) a couple of months ago. I got about an hour in before I was reminded of all the missed opportunities, the disappointment and the many, many things that I can't stand about either of those games. Maybe in another year or so I'll try it and finally be able to appreciate them. I hope so; there are plenty of people who still prefer FO:3 and Oblivion so maybe I just missed something.
I've spent just over six of the past twenty five hours playing LEGO Lord of the Rings. I'm rather enjoying it.
On that subject, I am having an absolute blast playing Lego: Marvel Super Heroes with my wife. I've got a nice large collection of Lego games (and lego sets. I happen to be an Adult Fan Of Lego) and I have to say that this one is really clicking on all cylinders, maybe even my all-time favorite so far. Much like the rest of my entertainment, I veer toward light and fun because my life is too stressful otherwise. Not always do I do this, but if it can be light, fun and great entertainment it's easily at the top of my list. Lego and Lego games are definitely in this category.
The problem with LEGO games is, IMHO, if you don't do exactly what it says (and often it never tells you what it wants) when it says so, the game suddenly just dies. If you play it perfectly it's great, but if you don't or you spend time trying to get the required number of studs or whatever, then it just... changes. It's a really thin line, but sometimes it's really noticeable.
XCom Enemy Within was released last night, and I've started playing with it (I had decided to pick it up after I learned that it included more than just the new mech and genetic options). Unfortunately, I'm having technical problems with it. Since I'm the only one complaining that I've seen, it may just be me. I have seen a couple of the new maps and they are kind of cool. UFOs no longer just crash in the middle of the wilderness -- there are also urban crash sites (unfortunately, those are the maps that I'm crashing on). There's a new timed element on the maps -- modifying your soldiers either genetically or cybernetically, requires a new substance called Meld. There's two meld deposits on some of the maps (so far, on all of the maps I've seen), but there's a short time limit on how long you have to get to them. Since they tend to be in the corners of the map (at least that's the way it appears), you have to take some risks in order to get to them. I've accidentally destoryed a meld cannister (hit the alien I was aiming at, but didn't realize that the cannister was that close to the bullet trajectory), and lost one due to a bug (that stupid thing where you can send a soldier to a spot, but somehow how it interprets it as you wanting to go to the roof above that spot instead -- lost it in that one turn that it took to correct my movement). Aside from the problems, it seems like a worthwhile reason to start playing again. Since Meld is a limited resource, unless you are going to farm it, it seems that it might be best to specialize in either cybernetics or genetics, at least based on what I've read. I don't have time to debug the issues I'm having right now but will do so tonight.
Desktop dungeons oooooohhhhhhhhh yeaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh *played it for almost 20 hours over the weekend* Edit: I really want the new XCOM expansion but oh my god desktop dungeons. Also Risk of Rain is really good.
BTW, my problems with XCom (other than an OLD bug with soldiers wanting to climb ladders in spite of explicit orders), have been resolved by verifying my game cache. I especially like that there are lots of new maps.
Risk of Rain oooooohhhhhhhhh yeaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Really enjoying it a LOT, AWESOME Happy to have backed the kickstarter. I have the Sniper, Engineer and Enforcer unlocked. Commando is the starting char. Finished the game on easy but the real game begins on normal, unlocks on easy aren't saved. Normal is the real game, and it's great
I've unlocked all the chars except Miner and HAN-D - beaten the game about 7 times on normal, twice solo and 5 times with parties of 2-3 players. Had quite a good time so far.
I've been playing Heroes of a Broken Land lately. It was at version Beta 6.0 when I got it and in the last 2 days has gone to 7.0 and then 7.2 and tomorrow morning is supposed to go to 7.3! LOL It's a fun little game a little like Legend of Grimrock but I think it has greater depth in the long run. I haven't finished the game yet, keep restarting new games whenever a new version comes out. If you liked Legend of Grimrock, I believe that you will like this.
I am still grinding away at Fallout 3. I have finished Operation Anchorage and Mothership Zeta. Next up is probably Point Lookout.
