Sadly, you are now lost in your own museum(?)

I had a clockwork crossbow that I used "This translation is all wrong" on (because it had some kind of on hit effect which didn't seem to work / do anything) and I got a not very good translation. After the cooldown expired I tried to "translate" it again and each time I get the message "Sadly, you are now lost in your own museum". Any idea what has caused this?

    Thanks

It's one of the ways that they balanced "This Translation is all Wrong" so that it's no longer the hands-down best skill in the game. People were abusing it to no end and in 1.0.3 Archaeology became the "take this in any build or you're stupid" Skill Tree. So, they put in a random limiter on "re-rolling" Artifacts with TTiaW.

    From the 1.0.5 Changelog (link):

    - FIXED: This Translation Is All Wrong! wasn't clearing damage effects on weapons, causing massive damage stacks

    - NERF: This Translation Is All Wrong! now enacts a Terrible Price. Also, we got to make another Marcus Brody joke.

    - NERF: "This Translation is All Wrong" saps magic from items, occasionally.

Also, procs on crossbows don't work in 1.0.5, but they will trigger when you're in melee.

So the "Terrible Price" is that you can't re-roll it anymore? Ok thanks for cleaning that up.

I guess I didn't "get" the joke in the "lost in your own museum" message, perhaps if I did it would have been clearer what was going on.

It's a reference to, IIRC, Last Crusade; one of the characters is an especially bookish fellow who once got lost in his own museum.

The whole Skill Tree is a solid wall of quotes from the various Indiana Jones movies.

Wait. I read it destroys the item. And GaslampGames on Twitter didn't think I was smoking crack when I said please change it so it doesn't destroy items.
I'm surprised the OP didn't lose the crossbow. Because, I heard it can be destroyed.

I think it would be awesome to have your own museum and get lost in it.

OK, so now I really want my own museum. As far as getting lost is concerned, I once (with direction) crossed the wrong bridge, and ended up looking for my aunt's house in the wrong burough of NYC. True story.

Then why was Gaslampgames not wondering what drugs I was on when I asked them to not make it destroy items? Now, I'm confused. Either that or I have the power to alter reality. :)

    Here's my twitter conversation.
@GaslampGames Can you please fix/change Lost in Translation so it doesn't permanently destroy your items. That is totally a horrible idea.
@GaslampGames There are probably hundred of ways that skill could be nerfed besides a chance to destroy items. I will pay you money. :)
    Stupid limit.
@DavidB10001 Infinite rerolls are a bad idea. We could lock it to one reroll, once, I suppose. We'll see.

    So, something seems odd.
I wish I had the power to alter reality. :)

No idea why they didnt think you were on crack, I have never had an item destroyed, it just says "You are lost in your own museum" and doesnt let you re-roll it anymore

The skill should substract one point of power (regardless of what bonus it is assigned to) each time you re-roll. Once you run out of points to re-assign you are 'lost in your own museum'. The sense of "destroying the item" might have been understood as "destroying its magical properties and usefulness to the player".

... at least that's how Nicholas explained it to me the other day. The design and code is all his for that one. If it really is doing something weird like eating items or not working at all then it's something we should indeed look at.

Ah. Okay. Well, is it you, or Nicholas, or someone else that responds to Twitter questions?
Because I must be going crazy.
That said, I fully agree that making it steal a point of power is fine.
    Makes sense too.

Well, to be fair, if all you did was make it so it had caps on how high item powers could reroll, it would be fine too.
Like make it so that you can't ever get more than 3 points in any stat, unless it started with more than 3. Like a good weapon, or armor.
I did manage to reroll my Fedora once, in 1.0.3 to get 2 AA. :)

David has his own twitter account (@dgbaumgart); I believe that Nicholas is the one who "runs" the @Gaslamp Games account.
