After playing DoD flawlessly over the past two days and clocking in 22 hours of gametime with no issues, I boot up Steam today to find the game will no longer run. Every time I attempt to boot it up, the game automatcially crashes. The configuration window opens, the window is completely black and then it crashes and closes itself. Anyone else encountered this bug?
Few things you can try. 1: Reboot, sometimes reboots fix things. 2: You can try verifying your steam cache. (right click on DoD in the steam game list, goto properties, goto local files tab. 3: You can try backing up your \documents\gaslamp games\dungeons of dredmor\ folder and then deleting everything in it. (this will delete your saves too, but rules out that one of those files is causing the problem) The files generally thought to be causing this problem are config.txt and or config.xml. PS: If you find a fix, post back what the fix was. And if the fix was deleting those files, save a copy of them, i think one of the Dev's wanted a copy, but i cant find where they asked for it at. EDIT: Looks like it was a twitter post "If it happens again, can you send me a copy of the config.xml file? contact@gaslampgames.com" Posted on July 27 2011
Am not sure about this bug since i have not experienced it personally. Maybe some details will help shed some light on the problem. Are you using -opengl or -directx modifiers? Have you tried to use them when launching the game? What operating system, and is it 32 or 64 bit? Which videocard do you have? Disabled your antivirus/firewall temporarily to test?
I have no idea what those modifiers are, so I assume I'd have to be conciously using them for them to be an issue? Where can I find details on using them? I'm using XP 32bit and my card is a Radeon 9800 PRO.
I believe that they are "-directx" and "-opengl" Chances are that you are crashing long before they ever get to be used. You can try adding one of them to the startup by right clicking on the game in steam menu, going to properties, then setting the launch options. Both are somewhat experimental, but if they get your game running again that would be good. Did you by chance do any windows updates prior to the game not working anymore?
In your steam\steamapps\common\dungeons of dredmor\ folder there should be a file called stdout.txt. Back that file up and then delete it. (or rename it) Its possible that your log has gotten too big maybe?
Tried both those commands, no change. Didn't do any updates, absolutely nothing (that I can think of at least) has changed since yesterday when it was working fine.
http://www.gaslampgames.com/forum/discussion/589/game-stops-loading-on-my-netbook. http://www.gaslampgames.com/forum/discussion/586/choose-thy-configuration-wisely These are the only posts i can find which appear to be related to your issue, but im not 100% sure. They both claim to have solved the problem, but you said you tried what they are suggesting without much success. Let me know if renaming/removing the stdout.txt fixes the problem. I had one that was 4+ megs that wasnt causing a problem, and it was automatically overwritten when i tried to launch DoD just now. Have you tried running the game directly from the main .exe with admin privileges?
Lol, ridiculously it's fixed now. Tried deleting the config.xml again, now game works again. Thanks for all the help, no idea why it didn't work the first time though!
You're welcome. Did you by chance save the config.xml file and send it to contact@gaslampgames.com with the title of 'corrupted config' or some such? Bet the devs would appreciate some assistance figuring out whats causing it.
