I wonder how Gaslamp handles betas.

A good question, but i'd imagine they'd be handling it with care.

Haha I meant more like the model.

    Examples:
    A) Pay for beta access that turns into full access with release.
    B) Family of Employees
    C) Limited slots selected randomly from people who apply.

Well i don't think so much B. That only seems to happen with larger companies. I think A could happen. And i think D) dedicated members of community who they can count on to get the job done :p

Sadly nowadays largely thanks to the larger publishers. Beta tests are also synonymous with "demo" So it can be tricky to sort of get good beta feedback. And at the same time not run off potential customers.

For Dredmor we did it none of those ways (well, B obviously but not only that).

We let in people we knew at first, or that had expressed an interest really early on (Hi! that's me!), then we slowly started ramping up who we let in. We did get most of our testers over at the SomethingAwful forums though (we didn't have a forum or following, really).

It worked out pretty well for us so I assume we'll do it somewhat in the same vein, but maybe with differences.

This is a subject of conversation at the office. There will be a beta At Some Point; we don't know if it will be paid or not or what or how or who.

Well, I am more than willing to test for you guys, and would be glad to buy in if that is what it takes!

You have a captive audience of like 30 people who are practiced at breaking games.

Well i am willing to brave the perils of a Clockwork empires beta. Though i suppose that is pretty much a foregone conclusion.

Only good betas are the betas with people actively testing the game.
Any other thing is a paid/free pre-launch demo.

Take in people that submitted lots of bug reports for Dredmore, people that created great mods, and diehard fans posting Very Interesting Messages on those forums every day.

And the people from SA are always good to have i guess.

I am more concerned with the lack of a shadow. Clearly this is not an actual person. But a clone from the Imperial Novyrus academy. And of course since we all know, clones have no souls, therefor he casts no shadow ! That and the head falling off. The Novyrus scientists never quite could get the hang of the head problem.

Yes, military is allway interesting in games like this. With so much FUN waiting for us, a good army could be necessary. And it´s something about the AI, too. I think this game could stand or fall with how well the AI works. You know I trust you blindely with anything else, but Dreadmore wasn´t a game to show of your AI-programming skills, so I can´t wait to see the AI in action.

My mid-week tradition of reading these blogs never fails to amaze me, and also remind me of why I never made it as a game-maker myself. I can design things just fine, but all the nitty-gritty that goes into actually implementing it...any small or independent group like you guys should be thoroughly commended for getting anything to actually work, let alone be fun. Dredmor was awesome, and I have a feeling Clockwork will actually surpass it. Keep up the good work!
