I'm not sure if we want Fax to handle that. I mean... no, you know what I mean.

Though it would be fun, even if half of the code would start exploding.

What fun are dark arts if they don't explode?

I remember XML coding from the days of making mods for CNC Generals! Ah, a wave of nostalgia just washed over me. The tag system will make modding things so much easier! (There were no tags in Generals, really...you had to make things yourself. A pain in the arse)

Also, I lament the loss of the technical excellence award and hereby state that Nicholas Vining and anyone else working with him on the engine of Clockwork Empires hereby receives an Arcani Arts Decree of Mechanical Wizardry™. The award will be presented in a purely digital form for now at a date to be announced later. Boilerplate, boilerplate.

(and on a side note, a request to stop with the Unity-bashing. There are many talented men and women, such as myself, who lack the Mechanical Wizardry but are full of the Composition Arts and who would not be able to bring their ideas to life without the assistance of such things as Unity. There are AAA companies who make absolute trash with their homegrown engines and small people who make gems with Unity. The true gamers will always know the difference.)

Don't take it as Unity-bashing; this is Nicholas upset that the IGF is basically telling him "since everyone can use Unity/etc, technical proficiency doesn't matter", when that's obviously not the case. The real target of his satire here is the IGF.

(For comparison; this is, to an engine programmer, roughly the equivalent of saying to an artist "art doesn't really matter, let's remove the art award and other categories will take it into account.")

I figured as much, Nicholas has an excellent sense of humor (or I assume its humor) and so do I. But every now and then I have to stand up for Unity. I completely and wholeheartedly agree that technical proficiency is so important to games that I'm still boggled at them removing it. If anything, with the rise of Unity and middleware, technical proficiency awards should be worth more. If everybody can just pick up Unity but people like you guys decide to make it yourselves, that makes you worth so much more than you were before. Hence, the Arcani Arts Decree of Mechanical Wizardry™

(I am so appalled by that IGF decision that I may just make the Decree a real thing. Who knows, it may gain traction.)

I actually think Unity is a good product for a lot of things, and the team working on it is *very* good. It singlehandedly destroyed a lot of its competition by virtue of being Really Good. It's just the best available target - and, in fact, is probably the single largest reason *why* the IGF is now saying "middleware can do everything".

Goodness knows, nobody ever said that about the Torque Game Engine...

Oh god, Torque. I hated Torque with a passion. Still do. My synapses go into a sort of weeping/yelling fit whenever I think back to it.

Well, I figured the "unity bashing" was simply a nod to the fact that Unity became quite popular fairly quickly. Not that it's a bad thing per se.

hey Daniel! Let's attach a gear to my belt so it'll suddenly become Steampunk!

    *ducks*

No really, I'm totally with him on this one. Apartments, bars, costumes and other things that people say "ooh, steampunk!" when it has no cohesive theme and is really just a bunch of old-fashioned junk thrown together. That's not steampunk. That's Classical Junkpile Modern. And I don't like it!

Also, I already know what my first, immediate mod for Clockwork Empires is going to be! Assuming, of course, that textures are easy to modify, that Perfectly Safe highly-pressurized steam ball will now suddenly be even more..... Steam-y.

Why do I have to think about 3D manouver belts from attack on Titan if you say that?
Can we add them, please? To fight the elder creatures?
