I've been brainstorming a mod, and I've got some questions about how staircases behave. Is it possible to mod a room so that a down-staircase always goes to a specific room on the floor below? I suspect that the staircases are hard coded to the point that I couldn't make this work.
Impossible, I'm afraid. Staircases are hard-coded and random. They do not appear in the xml. I'm pretty sure there's currently no way to alter or force which room a particular staircase goes to. There are things you can do to make sure a staircase never appears in a particular room (cover the walls with customblockers or border the walls with water), and there's a way to ensure a room always appears on a particular floor (via the 'seed' command in BranchDB, but it will require replacing files and won't work with Steam Workshop). That's about as close as you can get.
Thank you, Bergstrom. I was actually musing over this again the other day. I really wish I had access to some of those things, but a lot of what I was daydreaming will most likely be obsolete in the next expansion. I was thinking about making an Architect skill that would enable to you build a home base of sorts. The room would have automatic defenses so monsters don't wander in, and you could have a private elevator that would take you up and down (for easy access to your base). Pocket Dimensions will basically fill the need for this, although I was still thinking about putting in the "Dredmorvator" if it was possible.
