Just want to say I love the game. Put 20 hours in it so far. I started with a melee character. I'm new to roguelikes so I don't have permadeath on. It was a fun playthrough but I got to Dredmor and just felt incredibly weak against him so I decided to make a mage. I started the mage after the latest patch and I've noticed the spawning of monsters is horrendous. It constantly feels like I'm fighting a Monster Zoo. Literally every door I open there is a clog of monsters filling up most of the space in front of the door, usually 12-15 of them. And after I clear the door entrance there is already a huge group that starts chasing me from behind. I enjoy exploring the entire level on each floor but even when I've finally cleared most of the monsters(which is taking wayyyy longer this playthrough) the spawn rate doesn't really slow down like it did on my last playthrough. I still have to constantly fight hordes of monsters just to get back to rooms I've already been to in order to pick up items unlike my last playthrough where there would be just a few monsters 'here and there' when I backtrack. The game isn't harder, it just feels 1000 times more tedious than it did my last playthrough. Both playthroughs are on Dwarven Moderation difficulty. Am I missing something here? I just don't understand the huge difference in monster spawns between the 2 playthroughs. Thanks for any help.
Are you taking a lot of time to regenerate your mana between rooms now? As I understand it, the number of monsters spawned is a function of the amount of time you spend on a level -- take longer, fight more.
Ive seen fast respawns too. Just cleared 5th floor and in time it took me to clear 2 or 3 rooms I got respawns when I backtracked. Also seen lots of strange doors lately.like 1,5 "pairs" of them. Also doors that lead basically to nowhere and which you can get around -.- http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198023672179/screenshots/ example of the doors leading to "nowhere" (22nd one)
Yeah if you spam wait (spacebar) to regenerate mana/health, you're going to cause monsters to spawn. Do this enough and eventually you'll have armies behind doors waiting for you. I highly suggest just buying lots of alchohol and/or thinking about taking Blood Mage or Ley Lines (or both, Blood Mage is slightly better imo) if Mana is an issue for you.
