Can you build houses and other buildings out of unusual materials? For example could you have a colony where all the buildings were built out of mushrooms?

How about flesh and bone buildings for colonies which have completely embraced alternative spiritual practices?

I'll admit, that would be creepy , but an interesting idea, especially for those who fall into the occult practices in the game. Maybe an idea for a DLC/Expansion, if not at launch.

I second that. One thing I like about Starbound is how many things you can build out of so many different raw materials. Want your colony to live in onyx pyramids? Why not?!

I remember reading in one of their little ARR/fanfic blog update things about a brick factory getting tainted with some madness producing object and making bricks of flesh.

Hard to tell if they were being serious, joking, or a combination of the two though.

    Sounds promising. :)

It was the post quoted by EleSigma that inspired my question. Otherwise I agree it would be for DLC. But you have to admit, it would be cool to have a nightmare city of flesh or a dreaming city like Imryrr or a silent city of mushrooms.

There's a really good movie called "The Red Violin", which is about as far from being a horror film as you can get. That said, what gives the violin its color is blood mixed into the violin's varnish. I'd imagine that some well-intentioned but demented cult member might get the bright idea that blood is rather pretty, and can be used for all sorts of other things besides keeping your body warm and transporting oxygen and other chemicals through your body.
