Are there plans to have any holidays in CE? (does dwarf fortress have them?) where all your citizens celebrate and party ( and maybe cause a little mayhem). It would be an interesting way to ramp up happiness and severely deplete consumable reserves. Of course there wouldn't be holidays we have. More like -Cog Save the Queen Festival: Citizens build a shrine and then form lines to it to burn some personal treasure as a symbolic sacrifice toward the queen. -Celebration of the Full Gear Revolution: Similar to our new years, everyone forms large groups in the town center and drinks and revels and occasional brawl. -Lucky Cog Day: Citizens can hide lucky miniature cogs around town (and the wilderness) and others try to find them. -Kick an Orphan Day: Watch out Orphans! This Holiday isn't for you! Edit: This post has given me even more ideas. First is, there even a calendar? Do seasons change with the calendar? How long is the day night cycle? If your settlement lasted a year would it go through all the seasons?
If the Queen is human and at all like a true monarch, it's unlikely that she'd stand for the burning of personal treasures. Better that they be paid in taxes. You burn things for gods and spirits, while monarchs are quite capable of choosing and keeping the required sacrifices for themselves. After all, burnt items may go to the spirit world, where a living monarch would be unable to make use of them. Full Gear Revolution sounds more like what we celebrate on the 4th of July to me than New Year (unless you mean an astronomic revolution, as opposed to a changing of the government, in which case, nevermind).
I agree that the queen would much rather dictate what was taxed/taken, I hadn't thought that through, true. However, from a gameplay perspective, i thought it might be interesting for you as a player to have no control as your citizens burned things you might have wanted/needed. Maybe this could be extended such that it is a 'rogue' celebrations where 'save' was the word is used when something else is meant entirely. As for the full gear revolution, and I was making reference to a revolution of a cog being akin to our revolution around the sun.
You burn things, generally, for gods and spirits and ancestors and things like that, so you just have to change it to a spiritual or religious or pagan holiday. Holidays like that aren't necessarily favored or condoned by the state, but that doesn't lessen people's need/desire to celebrate. Maybe burning sacrifices will quiet restless ancient beings of immense power.
The Queen will not stand for any unauthorized parties, celebrations, jubilations, receptions, blow-outs, ho-downs or other festivities during The Age of Colonization. The wasting of time will not be tolerated under any account while our enemies make unbridled progress. Now smoke your half-a-cigarette in your allotted 2 minute break and get back to work.
I think this would be a fun idea..you raise morale but at the cost of productive activities. I think you should be able to declare one time holidays and even permanent. Today you defeated the steam dragon of the southern enemy; you believe it calls for a holiday!
