Forgive me if this has already been addressed elsewhere-- I've done a preliminary search and didn't see anything that sounded like it, but I wasn't exactly thorough. I'm interested in knowing what plans are in terms of soldiers learning to fight better. None of the blog posts seem to address this beyond simply having high morale for your forces. Which is cool, from a high-level perspective... But I feel it sort of removes any strong inclination to grow attached to a particular soldier, because even if he's the Hero of St. Joseph's Eel Cannery, he's still just as likely to die as any other random mook. In fact, he's probably even more likely to die, because he's plagued by horrifying memories of his buddies getting torn apart by fish people. Which seems... sort of un-fun. It seems like it would be relatively easy to tie this into various other systems in an interesting manner-- a soldier does something noteworthy and becomes more skilled, so they feel happy about it. Further, other people who are nationalist or otherwise military-inclined will think somewhat more highly of them, whereas those with eldritch sentiments would find them somewhat less appealing. Or perhaps soldiers go through some drills, causing them all to become slightly more effective, and making the colony as a whole feel more secure. I could go on, but I think you guys probably don't need me to-- you seem to be quite good at coming up with ideas on your own, so I'd just be wasting my breath. So, yeah. Is there anything like this implemented/planned? Or is it just too much detail for the player to manage?
I think I read a blog post waaaay back that had a little on this subject, in that so long as the solider doesn't go insane then there always fighting in tip top shape. Certainly improving skills is a possibility, and is one of hall marks of making the colonists more individual and memorable. So, yes, I do believe it's planned, but not on the table yet.
I do certainly hope so although I'm not in a rush for them to implement it yet. I'm a sucker for stuff like that. I have no idea hos much time I've spent in Dwarf Fortress, Gnomoria and similar games skilling them up and nursing soldiers to super-soldier state and getting a super-soldier squad only to cry rivers of tears as they die in epic defence of the kingdoms. And then do it again :-D
