Crafting over an Artifact?

So I found an artifact-variant of a Metal Orby Staff, which can be used to craft a Jingly Jangly Staff of Crystals or a Staff of Immaculate Conceptualization...

Question is: What happens to the artifact effects or even the artifact status if I do this?

Does the newly crafted item keep the same artifact bonuses? WIll it even be an artifact?

 

The item's properties will be totally replaced with those of the new item.

I suppose if I were an artifact I'd resent being used as spare parts, and wouldn't pass on any of my powers. Unless I were particularly noble. Most of the Dredmor artifacts don't look very noble.
