So as I was wandering the dungeons today, I found myself a nice Iron Hjalmar, and with a small reserve of silver in my backpack, saw an opportunity to craft myself a Runed Iron Hjalmar to replace my old crappy helm. Despite my lack of knowledge of the recipe in game, I popped the Hjalmar straight into my smithing kit, tossed two silver in there and awaited my beautiful shiny new helm. Instead, the kit spit out a silver ring, while the hjalmar sat in the kit on ingredient side. Needless to say, I was unhappy. Willing to risk my last two silver, I attempted it once more to rune my hjalmar (if you know what I'm saying). This time all three ingredients melded harmoniously and I was the proud new owner of a Runed Iron Hjalmar. So long story short, I know I didn't have the recipe, but why didn't it work? It worked the second time around and I didn't change anything. Did it have something to do with the order in which I put the ingredients in the kit? Ist confused
I don't know why the output changed but you're probably on to something by the order of ingredients. But if you don't have the recipe you can't be sure what will get crafted since some recipes share materials. You need the recipe to be sure.
I was under the impression that if you didn't have the recipe, and your chosen ingredients were a superset of an existing recipe, then you'd make the existing recipe. It appears this isn't always the case. It would be nice if recipes went from most specific to least specific, but oh well...
I've crafted many-a Runed Hjalmar but never encountered this issue. I doubt this matters but in what arrangement are you placing the ingredients? I've always done: Helmet Silver Silver ...... Someone else mentioned getting a Steel Sword instead of a Steel Cuirass so it does seem to be affecting certain people.
I set it up like you have it there, J-Factor. I picked the iron hjalmar and put into my already open crafting kit. I then put in the two silver. It crafted a silver ring. I put the silver ring in my inventory. Took the iron hjalmar out of the kit, held it in my hand, and put it straight back into the kit. I put two more silver in the kit in the same configuration, and it crafted a runed hjalmar. I really have no clue how it happened
You'll want to be absolutely sure to use the recipe selection then the autofill button for best results. Yeah, the UI for crafting is problematic and it's very much on our TODO list. It's a rather complex feature so it's taking some effort.
