...at my place and the bony goon won't leave. Uh, no. Actually for some reason DoD keeps crashing on me pretty reliably. If I'm playing on normal mode, it happens some time on the third floor, if I use No Time to Grind it usually hits me on the pirate ship, or the fungus caves. I've had it crash during combat on the floor, crashed in the pocket dimension while crafting. I've tired turning all the mods off, turning all the mods on, trying different combinations of mods. Vanilla game or modded game, I will always have a crash occur around those floors. I've tried different skill combinations, different weapons, different armors, I still can't narrow down or pinpoint anything related to the silly crash. It's really disheartening too, as I've had runs that were my best ever, more powerful than I had ever been before, that have been lost to the crash. Autosaves and having permadeath on or off don't seem to matter. My saves seem to go poof, or become unloadable if I have mods running. It says the mods are not present or corrupt, even when they've been confirmed as checked in the start thingy and they work perfectly fine if I use them for a new game. Dredmor's been quite fun for me, but being unable to progress beyond a set point is really sapping my enthusiasm. I'm using the Steam version of the game and have checked the file integrity several times. I just don't know what to do to try and fix this.
Check in your game folder if there's any .dmp files relevant to your newest crashes, they'll be timestamped. Upload them here if there are.
Dang it. It's very annoying when the "tell us why it fails" backup plan... fails. We'll keep looking for these causes, though. If you do manage to reproduce a crash then we can definitely fix it. Until then, it's sort of random, sorry.
I managed to get to floor 8 or floor 9 before I crashed out this time. Once again the dmp file is 0 bytes in size, but the close the program window mentioned something about SDL.DLL. I should've screen shotted it. I will next time.
What expansion packs are you running? Are you running with any mods? Does the problem go away with NTTG turned off? In the mean time, try playing with permadeath off for a bit (I know, I know!) It might help us stop a save from being deleted so we can see what's going on.
All the expansions, and the problem occurs no matter what set of mods I'm using. Turning off NTTG shifts the crash from floor 6-8 to floor 3. I realized what I've been doing different now that I wasn't doing before when there were no crashes. Before the crashes started, I'd always played with the sound muted. Going to try a mod-less run to try and snag that save file.
We actually save the mods you use *into* your savefile now, so they'll come along for the ride. Do you have a particularly weird sound card?
It's just the basic one included on my motherboard. Turning on the options "Disable Visual Themes" "Disable Desktop Composition" and "Run Program as Administrator" for the .exe file seemed to delay the crash. I got down to the fungal cave on a normal game, and then had the crash occur shortly after getting a sidequest. Went through the next few floors on the save without crashing. Turned the game off for dinner, came back, muted the sound from the launcher, am now well into floor 9 and have not had it crash again. This is the furthest I've ever been in the game, and it's rather neat seeing new weapons, armor, and accessories that I've never seen before. I'm going to attribute my success to the pair of Diggle Torment Rings that I managed to find.
Hmm! Well, if it's the audio driver, it's something to do with your system configuration. I'm sort of curious as to what it could be. You're on Windows, right? Can you run DXDiag (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DxDiag) and post the results? Thanks!
