Anybody ever have an "Oh yeah..." moment when playing after taking a long break? Here's mine

So I took a long break from Dredmor since I burned myself out on playing it while I was looking for work and had beaten Count Digula and Dredmor several times. I opened it up this morning though and decided to roll a random character since I had never won with one. I got to DL 2 and encountered a double monster zoo, which I was able to slog through with my trusty Hunting Diggles. I had got to the point where there were only those annoying Wights running away from me, when suddenly I get hit and lose half my health. Confused, I stepped back, ate some food, and ran forward again, when something blocked my movement. I clicked the square in front of me, at which point I swung my mace, and an INVISIBLE BOSS PUMPKIN at DL 2 countered and killed me in one hit.

I had forgotten that Zoos can have mobs from lower levels.

    How about you guys?

I have such moments whenever I have a hard weak and return to the code I wrote for something, anything (not only DoD, but other things too sometimes), and look at it incredulously trying to remember what was that particular spawn supposed to be doing.

Nothing like this in the game, though. I tend not to forget things like this for whatever reason.

  3. I'll return after a few months and completely forget what I'm doing, and my notepad of DoD stuff won't help much. This is mostly because I can't help but make crafting builds. I find it much worse in Civilization games. After a week I'll forget where I'm roading to, where my settlers were going, what I wanted to research, and what all my plans were. It's part of the reason why I binge an entire Civ session and wake up the next morning with not nearly enough sleep.

I definitely have had that experience -- this time with a mod. I go from playing vanilla to playing moderately to heavily modded games. Sometimes I forget some of the surprises in those mods or just act without thinking.

I forget which mod it is, but it's one that adds these dragon shrines sometimes with offerings on them. Part 1 of my forgetfullness had me automatically picking up this piece of meat (something not even worth picking up, honestly) off of a shrine, giving me a horrible curse, which includes like a -10 or so to pyro/fire damage. I happened to be playing a CK build and part 2 of my forgetfullness/careless mistake was to use the CK rocket jump in combat... forgetting that my fire resist had gone way negative, I burned up in my own blast (only positive aspect to it is that I took out 2 or 3 other mobs doing it).

Similarly, I encountered the Diggle God of Death (?), and automatically prayed to him. It had been so long that I had forgotten that he gives you extreme negatives to mana regen (just checked -- it's a whopping -25... wow), and my Egyptian/astrology build suffered greatly from that. I never found another Diggle God to replace him. Note that this was not bad enough to stop me, and it ended up being my very first win after a long, long time. Still, had that not happened, I wouldn't have felt the need to rush to Dredmor and may have had a much easier time with it.

Note to self -- I gotta get myself a cheat sheet with all those gods.

On my first good run back to playing, I managed to screw myself out of the monster zoo item two floors in a row in the only two ways possible- leaving the floor and then going to the pocket dimension. Needless to say after the second I was pretty enraged.

That's not too bad. Monster zoo items are hit and miss anyway...and mostly miss.

My most common mistake is to come back and start a new build and forget trapsight... and promptly die on the first floor.
