A wave of 3 Fishpeople with weapons were able to kill my disorganized Military squad of 4 soldiers with no losses, and proceeded to systematically massacre my entire colony. That strange purple fish he's clutching is a something like a pistol. It's capable of killing soldiers and colonists in 2 shots. Basically, if your soldiers don't shoot first, they're dead, and none of your other colonists will fight, so your entire settlement is lost. I suggest some balancing may be in order. It may also be necessary to focus on building a defendable fort before establishing basic industry.
I knew people would start complaining about this. They are hardly over powered or extra difficult. You just have to make sure you actually stick together early on and not go building cutting trees etc way off like you probably used to. Your military should be able to handle them, the only downside now is they actually get properly injured and not just the slap on the face they used to get. I am sure that for future, my view anyway is that the Fish People should somehow obtain the technology to use weaponry or something, over a period of time which can be random or what not. Something along those lines. But wouldn't want the fish people to just aimlessly chase people to get shot and die pretty easily like they did before. At least we have a proper challenge now EDIT: Actually I change my mind, about 1 hour into the game and my 3 soldiers did die 1 by one to firearms. That is the biggest threat really. Maybe they could start off with clubs/unarmed and then as I said gain the "right" lol, to use firearms.
I totally disagree with the 'extra difficult' part. I had two people die just as the game loaded and before I could even drag the mouse to do a single forage command. I should at least need to go near the fish people before they start indiscriminately murdering my population. What am I supposed to do when the fish people spawn on top of my colonists?
Giving them weapons is cool, but they shouldn't be more powerful than what the colonists are using, at least in the beginning. Fish people usually can get hit four times before dying, if I've been counting right. if they can kill people with two hits from a fish gun, that seems overpowered. How about making them weaker, or better, run out of ammo? I would also suggest giving them just a spear or something like that, but there might not be any art or animations for that yet.
I got interested in this game by a interview with Gaslamp Games in PC Gamer a while back. One of the things that got my attention was the question "what if we don't kill them, but instead return them changed? That would make more stories than just killing them of." (Translated from Swedish, but that was the essence of it.) I rather die by some horrible creature coming from the depths summoned by some of the settlers, than by the hands of the fishmen.
Would be neat if they got guns overtime, but at the beginning it's a bit rough (And they do seem rather powerful!). My colony survived for a while, but after my military was massacred in the Battle of the Storage Yard, the Slimey Gills ravaged my society from therein out. I requested support from HMG, but I suppose my pleas went unheard.
To be clear, I have no problem with more difficulty - it just means the early game is more like Starcraft, and less like Civilization. What it does mean, though, is that a large percentage of games will become non-viable very early on, unless some way to recover from catastrophe is introduced. You could conceivably continue playing with 0 colonists, for example, and just wait for waves of replacement immigrants (I'm quite amused at the thought of fresh-faced colonists arriving to find a deserted town littered with corpses). The problem with that scenario is that Fishmen raiders don't leave after they're done mulching your colonists; not only will they kill new arrivals, their mere presence means nobody will tend the fields or use the workshops. It's just an irrecoverable failure state. I suppose an easy solution is to have the Fishmen get bored and leave after some amount of time has passed.
Funny thing, actually. Digging into the code for damage, it seems that *everything* is essentially being treated like it has half the hitpoints it ought to have. So I'm going to fix that. (Will also probably drop the fish pistol range down a couple points.) -- Also! You can build gabions to wall stuff off, which should help a bit.
Well I suppose if we're going to have to deal with tougher Slippery Fins, we best prepare ourselves for total war. I daresay a few Gibbly Gobbly heads attached to a pike will show them one for! Good show indeed for the lads in front! Some years later, future colonists will know of our courageous sacrifices against these aquatic terrors!
For the benefit of Her Majesties' Government and for the glory of the realm, these pikes will maintain morale and ensure our victory within these lands. I have it on good faith that if we do our best, for Queen and country, that our diligence shall overcome these monsters of the sea!
