Windows Vista/7 64-bit Game hangs when using faster animation rate

I'm currently having a problem where the game will hang if I try to play with the animation rate sped up (= key). I'm running version 1.0.11 with no mods or expansions.

The steps I've found to reproduce the problem are:
    1. Load a particular save (attached).
    2. Press the = key to speed up the animation.
    3. Fight about 5 - 15 monsters.
The point where the game hangs is always when I've just melee attacked a monster. It plays the zappy, electrical sound effect (I assume this is for voltaic damage), and then freezes up. The music keeps playing, but the animations are frozen, and the keyboard and mouse don't work. Eventually Windows pops up a "This program has stopped responding" dialog. While frozen, the game is using 100% of one CPU.

This problem never seems to happen if I leave the game at the normal animation rate.

Also, my only source of voltaic damage is the amulet I'm wearing. If I remove this, I no longer do any voltaic damage, but the game will still make the voltaic sound effect and then freeze. Also, when I remove the amulet my stats don't update unless I take a step. (I don't know if that's related, but it's a weird glitch.)

I've run the game both through Steam and directly from the executable, including using the -nukesteamcloud option, but I see this problem no matter what. Any ideas? Is my save file just corrupted somehow?

This bug is annoying, but has been around a long time. Some people have been unable to reproduce it, but I get it every time I use the animation speed changer either to speed up or slow down.

I have no solution to offer you, but I can assure you that you are not alone with this. (I have sounds and music disabled, so I have no idea if it is related to sounds or not.)

Well that's disappointing. Especially since I only recently learned I could speed up the animation in the first place ;) Any idea if a fix is in the works for this?
