So one fateful December day, I set out to make a holiday-themed Dredmor mod, not knowing of any modding resources, this forum, or even if it had been done before. I'm still unsure about that last one. Anyways, this is the result: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=115819440 Spoiler: Santamancy Details Level 0 - Off-Duty Mall Santa "Your Santamancy training begins with employment at a nearby shopping center, where generosity and kindness know no bounds. Or at least that's what you're paid to say." -1 +1 +1 Level 1 - Present Toss "You've begun handing out presents to random passers-by. You still can't remember what you actually put in them, though." +3 Ability: Present Toss 8 A missile with a variety of possible effects which scale to Alchemy, Caddishness, or Burliness. Level 2 - Milk 'n' Cookies "You've gained the ability to summon milk and cookies for your leisurely consumption. Your consequent rotundness has resulted in a decreased vulnerability to most of the elements." +2 +2 -1 Ability: Milk 'n' Cookies 42 Summons one Glass of Milk and one Questionable Cookie which are placed at the player's feet. The milk is a 25-MP booze, and the Cookie is a 25-hp food. Level 3 - Down the Chimney "You've figured out how to gain absurd amounts of velocity by way of a secret chimney portal network. The downside to this is that since nobody bothers to clean their chimneys, you've got a very persistent cough." +1 +10 Ability: Down the Chimney 67 Teleports the player to a selected square, displacing whatever was on that square. Trails a large cloud of chimney smoke on the teleport path which inflicts a heavy debuff to anyone who steps on it. Level 4 - Summon Rudolph "Being a widely acclaimed Santamancer, you've gained access to the secret reindeer pens. However, thanks to the wonders of outsourcing, the reindeer have managed to eschew their responbilities to you in favor of reindeer games." +1 +1 Ability: Summon Rudolph 80 Summons a Rudolph to fight by the player's side. Rudolph is a relatively powerful monster with a decent amount of HP and fairly good damages. Level 5 - Buff of the Big Man "You've finally unearthed a spell used by Saint Nicholas himself to empower his other Santa-like abilities. It eats mana like a bitch, though." +1 +1 +1 +1 Gain Item: Santa's Hat A 7, 12, 2, 2, 25 hat with 3 artifact bonuses. Ability: Buff of the Big Man 50 A buff which grants 2, 1 and 1, as well as nearly doubling the effects of most festive spells, wands, and ornaments. Costs 1 mana per turn to maintain. Spoiler: A couple screenshots Any feedback is appreciated, especially bug reports. Direct download is now up. I didn't know it was that easy
Nice. But you may want to consider posting a copy of the mod here on the forums so non Steam users can use it too. Desura, Gamefly, and Humble Bundle users need some love too.
Yeah. Gaslamp Games is a great company. They actually bother to support the customers. I wish other game companies would notice and follow their lead.
I... tried. Good screenshots are a thing I'm just complete rubbish at. There should be a couple shabby ones in the OP now, though. Also, I'm considering extending the theme to all holidays instead of just the one or two in December. Thoughts?
I am apparently still updating this thing, despite it currently being January. That said, the most recent update includes a new skill - Santamancy! The OP should be updated with the details and a new .zip file. This version has not yet been released on the Steam Workshop because I'd prefer to get any bugs and balance issues worked out first, especially since it's my first skill.
Caveat: I haven't played the skill, but here's my general thoughts on looking at it: 1) Icons are awesome. 2) I feel you throw around resists too freely. 3) I'm not a big fan of the 'dead' first level. I'd add a new level 0 (which offers more than +1 NET base stat), and push level 1 to level 2, etc.
1) Why thank you. 2) Yeah, I was a touch sleepy when I did the final skill coding and realized that I had completely forgotten skill/resist boosts - so I did the easy thing and just threw resists everywhere. I'll tweak it a bit to make it less resist-heavy. 3) I did that on purpose to avoid the first-level-modded-spell bug. Unless by 'dead' you mean 'weak in terms of bonuses', which is also a thing I can fix. I could also tweak it to have a chance of casting a weaker version of Present Toss when you hit things, although I've not done things like that before. Or I could do both. Either way, I'd prefer to know what you mean by dead before I go about tweaking that. Also, I found a problem which I'll get a fix in for with the rest of everything - you can't turn Buff of the Big Man off. It's like a bike with no brakes - the only way to stop it is to manacrash hard.
