Finally, with my Psyonic, Mage Trainer, Leywalker, Promethean, Blood Mage, Matemagic, Archeology red haired chick I managed to kick that bony ass. He went down more easier than I thought... recursive curse + pyre deliver quite a punch and that couple of mass destruction bolts and squid really helped with interlopers. As I wanted, I cleared it with no mods at all, and now I want to replay it with some extra. What mods you suggest to begin with? What's your favorite and why? I tend to prefer spellcaster characters over melee. (Also going to try to no mod GRPD Dredmor with a melee build sooner or later)
Personally I'm rolling with Interior Dredmorating for the enhanced number of rooms and the skill trees Chronomancy (because Precognition is hilarious), Clockwork Knights and Wind Magic. All three of those from the icons to the design could have been made by Gaslamp themselves.
If you want to go magic the Radiant Magic is really fun and interesting, though it does make you look squishier than a watermelon at a Galagher performance. Use with caution. I'm having a lot of fun with it.
Gotta mostly agree with lccorp2. Interior Dredmorating, Roguish Renovation, FAXPAX, Compleat Essential Skills, Clockwork Knights, Runecaster, and Chronomancy are, IMHO, the best mods in terms of giving you a completely different Dredmor experience without really violating the spirit of the main game. Barrier Maiden, SwiftStriker, and Radiant Wizard all get honorable mention, too.
Doing him melee is pretty hard. I managed to GRPD him once, but I wasn't using ROTDG. It's annoying, since you have to fire bolts/throw stuff at him instead of using your own archetype (though throwing stuff is still melee-oriented). As for what mods to use, I can't suggest any since I don't use them. Everyone else seems to have suggested the good ones, though, so use those.
Well I've worked through pretty much every mod except for Disciple of Chaos and Trickster, which are broken so I'll have to fix them before putting them back on, and the homestuck mod, which I doubt is going to be that awesome but I will also give it a look sometime. The list I've ended up with after testing, eliminating the mods I felt broke too much or weren't worth it, are: Code: <mod name="A Debacle of Diggles" /> <mod name="Arcanist" /> <mod name="Atheist Monk Class" /> <mod name="Barrier Maiden" /> <mod name="Chronomancy" /> <mod name="Clockwork Knights" /> <mod name="Computer Wizard 0.1" /> <mod name="Cooliomancy" /> <mod name="Dire Gourmand" /> <mod name="Dragon Knight" /> <mod name="Elemental Warrior" /> <mod name="Essential Skills Complete" /> <mod name="FaxPax" /> <mod name="Gardener Mod" /> <mod name="Practical Geology" /> <mod name="GraveDigger Skill" /> <mod name="Interior Dredmorating" /> <mod name="Jay's Mega Phoneme Mod" /> <mod name="Lunar Heritage" /> <mod name="Mana Mastery" /> <mod name="Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness" /> <mod name="SwiftStriker" /> <mod name="Usurper" /> <mod name="Wind magic" /> <mod name="Witcher" /> All the mods listed here are either quite cool in their own right or minor enough not to deal any havoc with the base game mechanics. Note that there are quite a few other worthwhile ones that I'll give a brief explanation of why I do not play with them, but are definitely worth trying: Runecaster and Tactics are both awesome. But both have some balance issues (Tactics being UP and Runecaster being OP). Runecaster adds a lot of recipes and is rather tedious when you roll it. Roguish Renovation is an absolutely awesome mod. Just, a lot of the stuff it adds are a bit OP and it changes the game balance a fair lot from what it is unmodded. Radiant Wizard and Blood Knight also somewhat overshadow other skills on a build and in the case of radiant wizard requires perfect planning around it, given that I play random builds I can't really deal with that. Le Mod du Zara is pretty nice if you can get it working stably and can put up with the IKEA reagents showing up in vending machines and such. I wouldn't highly recommend it but it is worth taking a peek at it definitely. Extreme Monkism is a neat concept, might be worth doing a themed run around it, but it is a tad on the bland side. For FAXPAX, I would recommend NoDA over DA in terms of long term replayability. I personally am not terribly fond of the DA skills, they take up lots of hotbar slots, are a tad overpowered, and they aren't very interesting in and of themselves. They are worth taking a look at though, so download DA first.
