Lets say you ran out of wood, so your carpentry workcrew is idle. It would be nice if idle carpentry workcrews automatically took up tree chopping jobs. This would decrease micro, as you wouldn't have to unassigned to get them to go collect more raw materials, and would make sense. Ceramics and Metalworkers could mine surface node, as well.

How difficult would that be to implement? Hopefully not that hard, it would increase quality of life for players.

Well, they used to do that back in the day, only they did all jobs unless you filtered out all but chopping/mining etc.

I think the reason they removed it is that it appeared to players they weren't doing their proper workshop jobs when they should have been, or sometimes it took too long to get back to those jobs - slowing production.

Yes, but almost always when I find them idle it's because they don't have enough materials to work. If it's just limited to the one type of job, I think it would be a help instead of a hindrance.

I'm with you on this, for sure. Would improve pacing quite a bit when you're short on overseers especially.
