When you have a bolt selected, you can right-click greyed-out and even undiscovered tiles and potentially shoot an enemy if there is one present. If there isn't, you don't fire an arrow (I don't even think a turn passes, but I am not 100% on that). If there are no objects in the flight-path of the bolt, the enemy is hit and takes damage as it normally would. It aggro's, moves around, etc,... Normal spells don't work on tiles not currently in the sight radius, let alone on undiscovered tiles. It's weird that shooting arrows does work. I haven't tried thrown weaponry, as the fit situation hasn't presented itself yet.
