Just bought this game with the Steam deal going on and decided to install it and try it out a bit. I'm going through the tutorials no trouble, and then I hit the tutorial where you're to pick up a mace. I do that, and then look over the attributes to see what they're about and bam, out of nowhere my laptop just restarts. Doesn't crash to desktop, doesn't give me any warning. Strangely enough, I seem to have received an achievement either after that or right as it was happening, "Suddenly the Dungeon Collapses." Ok, that's curious. I let my laptop restart, log back in, log into Steam, boot up the game and go through the entire tutorial no problem. Start a new "real" file, walk about a bit, look over my inventory and skills, save and decide I'll check it out some more later. I exit the game. Suddenly, my laptop restarts again, not three seconds after I exit the game, and here I am, having gone through the same process mentioned above (excluding jumping back into Dungeons of Dredmor) wondering what may have caused this and what information you guys would need to help me figure it out what the problem might be. Sorry for the length, but I thought I might as well give you the basic event overview before we proceed into anything else. Thanks to anyone that takes their time this Christmas/Xmas/whatever holiday eve, to help me out on this. Dungeons of Dredmor looks to be fun, but I don't want to have to worry about my laptop restarting at key moments of gameplay every time I play.
Does/Has your laptop ever exhibited this behavior while doing something else? Whenever I hear about random restarts the little bell in my head immediately wants to think it's either an overheating issue or a driver incompatibility. Video and Sound drivers are the usual culprits, but you may as well check your other drivers while you're at it. Worth giving a shot anyway; try the simple stuff first. Cheers! ~FlaH
Yeah it has, with two other indie titles, The Path and Minecraft. The problem seems to have lessened a bit with Minecraft, though, but I'm not sure why. This laptop has switchable graphics and I made sure to set it to use the dedicated card, so that's all I can think of. However I also set Dungeons of Dredmor to use the dedicated card, and my problem persists. It may be a driver incompatibility somewhere, but I'm not sure how I'd check that. I'm fairly certain my dedicated graphics card is up to date, and last I tried updating my audio drivers, well...Let's just say I didn't get any audio till I did a system restore since I didn't know where to locate the original drivers. Thanks for taking the time to respond Tehflah!
heh, no problem Gmr Leon Yeah, I would bet you have a system problem more likely than not since it spans multiple programs. You may want to try to locate the drivers for all of your system through the manufacturer's website of your laptop. This may or may not work, but it's a good place to start. There's a program called Memtest 86+ on the internet that you can burn to a CD and will boot to CD if you tell your BIOS to do so. You may already have it set to attempt to boot off CD so that may be unnecessary. This program checks your memory for errors in memory loading and unloading. The reason I'm saying this might be another good place to head if getting your drivers right, is because if there's an issue with your memory at some address; the system might be hard rebooting whenever it's trying to use that address. When a piece of software hits the memory and gets something back that is totally unexpected, unexpected results follow. This is a common cause of dreaded blue screens of death as well. Backing up and reinstalling Windows is always my last resort just to get a clean slate, but I'm sorta OCD and like to clean slate things just to remove clutter So your mileage may vary, but there is a chance that something in the OS got gummied up I suppose; unlikely, but a chance. I wouldn't do this quite yet if you're not experienced in the matter. Cheers! ~FlaH
No memory errors. Went back to the support site for my laptop and gave a few of the drivers another go. Turns out one of the drivers associated with my graphics card wasn't installed (no idea how I missed that). Updated the audio driver to be safe, but it still seems to have issues with the Dolby Advanced Audio driver not being up to date (I can't for the life of me find the latest driver, though, so I'm hoping uninstalling that will keep it from bugging me).* That last part's my own problem, and besides that, I tried the game again for about thirty minutes or so (more than my last few runs amounted to) with no trouble at all. *To clarify, I'm not without audio because of that, the updated drivers were Realtek, and they did that the last time I tried updating my audio drivers. Ended up trying something that made me go through a system restore to get my audio back. This time I just decided to toss out what I mentioned above. Doesn't seem to have produced any problems. Thanks for the advice. Glad it wasn't anything serious enough to require an OS wipe and reinstall. That's my last resort as well. Merry Christmas, should you celebrate the holiday!
