Load Game - Walk about 30 Turns - Crashes Regardless of Player Action

So, I do not have a good record with Gaslamp or Dungeons of Dredmor. I saw the patch notes were recently "FIXED: various issues with saving and loading games, including but not limited to your inventory disappearing, your save games breaking, and you losing levels when entering or leaving the pocket dimension" and I thought to myself "Holy fark! Maybe it's playable now!"

So I've had my saves deleted once already (with the steam cloud off, I might add, before you all say "omfg steam cloud"). Luckily I have learnt to backup every 15mins or so while playing.

Now, after my saves were deleted, I copied my saves back into the save folder from my backup folder. The save was in the pocket dimension (not the Wizardlands, don't have the expansion - not giving any more money to gaslamp).

I leave the pocket dimension, do 30 turns of anything and the game locks up - Edit (Can't edit the title) this happens when I hit something. Great.

So.... backing up saves doesn't work when they can just randomly become completely unusable?

It's been out for a few years - I'm amazed they haven't fixed this. I remember my old save where I was trapped because walking into the room I just came through, (the only way out as the room I was in was a dead end) crashed the game.

The fixes are in the beta version, so if you aren't on that one they won't take effect. You can subscribe to it through Steam in the game's properties.

Also, you might be using the Amber Ring of Unending time or some electrical proc item. If so, that's what is crashing you. It's fixed in the beta and has been for a while.

Right click, properties, betas, opted in to "Beta -". That right?

Did they ever fix the random crashing? Will the beta have fixed the save deletion?

    That's correct.

The random crashing should be pretty much all resolved, if you do manage to crash it (with a fresh save), then please, let us know.

The save deletion is the Steamcloud screwing up occasionally, if you've disabled it through Steam itself, then it doesn't do anything. As far as I know that's Steam's fault. You can disable it for sure if you open up config.xml (in your saves folder) and change the line "enableSteamCloud=1" to "enableSteamCloud=0".

Sorry for the problems you've had with the game.

Hah, now it won't even load my saves. It just crashes when I try to load them. What a shame.

I apologize. It's possible that the save got corrupted with the old version and that led it to constantly crash and not work with this one. If you play the beta with a fresh character it should not have issues, hopefully.

I've had saves disappear even with the Steam Cloud turned off. It happens much less often, but it still happens.

  8. I had some save-vanishing issues when CotW came out, but after The Big Bugfix Patch for CotW, no problems at all since with either saves vanishing, or crashing.

I /have/ had two crash-to-desktop incidences when fighting rooms of Queen Bees, but I wonder if that has something to do with Death By A Thousand Taunts...
