As some background to the problem, which may actually have been the root cause... This morning I had to deal with a malware issue. My antivirus program detected a few misbehaving programs after downloading a program that had been recommended to me. It put unwanted add-ons into both Firefox and Internet explorer, and according to documentation on the malware, it would redirect my search results, install adware, etc. I think I finally took care of it because everything (with one exception) seems to be working normally again. I had to remove programs (including ones that were really stubborn-to-leave). The problem is that my mouse now has lost some functionality that it formerly had and the scroll wheel no longer work to scroll. I always use it in MS Outlook, and while browsing the net, and even in Steam. I did look at my mouse settings and adjusted the wheel settings, but it hasn't helped. I also checked for and installed new mouse drivers. Any ideas?
Nevermind. Whatever was going wrong seems to be working now (a little more erratically than before, but still). Only thing I did is I re-enabled shockwave and Unity in Firefox (it was disabled because of 'security issues' as reported by Firefox, but Firefox no longer is considering them a security risk.
BTW, I thought this started working again, but no such luck. While playing ESO, both my mouse AND keyboard started acting up. Booting to the BIOS setup and everything was fine at first but then both keyboard and mouse acted funky again. Booting in safe mode, though, seems to fix everything (except, of course, that I'm in ****ing safe mode).
Have you tried to run Spybot to look for malware? Here is a link to the website: http://www.safer-networking.org/ I just did a reinstall of Windows XP myself. Sometimes, that is the only way to fix whatever problem you are having with an operating system. My problems were mostly a dying hard drive so I needed to reinstall in any case but it had been 2 or 3 years since my last one and I needed it.
I haven't run that but thanks, I will. But now I'm fairly certain that the problem is just a dying mouse. I no longer have any issues with the keyboard at all. My mouse, though, will now just stop working entirely after a slow sputter. I'm not sure why the mouse dying would affect the keyboard, though, so I could be wrong. The issue though, does seem electronic. At least it seems that if I start using it cold, I have a good half hour to an hour of solid use before I have problems (which would be very odd if it were caused by malware).
Yeah, it is likely hardware. I have seen drivers conflict with one another at random times though. Back in the 90's, the Logitech mouse drivers liked to conflict with other drivers quite a bit. I have seen printer drivers in the past that would cause me networking problems. The best way to test the hardware is to either take it to a different PC or get a different mouse to put on yours and see if the problems persist. Borrowing a mouse from a friend or family member shouldn't hopefully be too difficult. I personally have around 4 to 7 mice around my house and my Dad probably has another 3 or 4 of his own. No, I don't use all of them but I purchased them from garage sales and such and they do work so if my mouse dies I do have a replacement handy that I can use or I can lend out to family/friends.
Might also be a good idea to start looking for a new mouse. Depends on your budget and just how old that logitech mouse is but a new mouse could be a significant upgrade. Personally I love my Redragon Perdition, which is also fairly reasonably priced for a feature-packed gaming mouse. Good build quality too. Another option I have hands-on experience with(bought slightly before the perdition) is the Roccat Kone XTD. Very smooth mouse, I ended up prefering the Perdition mainly for the extra buttons and thumb button placement. This one should also be a natural transition that just intuitively work after switching from a logitech mouse, and it's more comfortable. Bit on the expensive side though.
One Pointing Device to Rule Them All. I really wish they made a higher sensitivity version of that though.
BTW, no problems since getting a new mouse. This is what I got for myself: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104857
