Lord Dredmor on First Floor. Bug?

I had something weird happen to me yesterday.

I loaded my most recent character, a Level 5 Promethean focused mage. I had mostly cleared the first floor before loading my save, and was just have a quick look around the map to make sure I hadn't missed anything.

Imagine my surprise when I open a door I had previously missed, and here's this large monster I hadn't ever seen before. That looked like a colored version of the Lord Dredmor statues I'd crushed many times before, and was coming after me. Oh and it was also called "Dredmor"

I didn't see much of a distance into the room because I immediately backed up and started lobbing Obvious Fireballs at Dredmor. There must have been a vendor nearby, because I got an achievement for hitting Brax. I didn't know what was going on, but after two fireballs Dredmor kept coming.

On the third (or possibly forth. I was too surprised to keep careful notes) Dredmor keels over, and my character starts flexing like mad. I assume triumphant music played, but I had the music turned off so all I could see was my character frozen and flexing for 30 seconds to a minute before I was award two achievements for killing Lord Dredmor on Dwarfish difficulty and Hardcore, and taken to the game over screen where, sure enough, my character was listed as having "Killed Lord Dredmor!". Though, amusingly enough, my score was much lower than characters that had died after only reaching level 3 only to die an ignoble death.

I can't find mention elsewhere that this had happened before or was supposed to happen. My sense is that Dredmor went down way too easily and appeared way too early on.

Am I wrong that this is odd?

    A few details:
I was connected online with Steam, so I'm reasonably certain the game was up to date.
The character had been made within the last week or so.
The door that Dredmor was behind was immediately north of an Anvil room. Almost all of the rest of the floor had been cleared before I opened the door. There was only enough space on the map to make a small, squarish room. I didn't notice any unusual tiles.
My character was approximately level 5. I had 5 total points in Promethean Magic (Up to Fireball), and I believe one additional point in Magic Training
I don't know if mods or cheats even exist for this game, but I was playing completely unmodified and without cheats.

It was a bug loading an old save with the new patch, where Brax was replaced with Dredmor. You wont see it in a new game.

I'm kind of enjoying seeing Dredmor in charge of the shops. Even evil overlords have to support their armies somehow, right?
