I've been thinking about a game mode (like PD or NTTG) which would add hunger to the game, like old school roguelikes (Nethack, ADOM, or even Rogue).

Maybe in such a mode you'd encounter special ennemies which could actually one-shot you, unless you're very careful. My thoughts go to Nethack's cockatrice, which I used to hate. Do you think being Digglified is a good death for your adventurer ?

I was expecting this thread to be a request for diagonal movement.

Hmm, nah, but I've got a name. The Digglatrice.

FEAR THE DIGGLATRICE ! THOU SHALL TREMBLE AT HIS NAME !

So, what do you guys think about the hunger component, too ?

There's lots of food in this game, why would the hero ever have to worry about going hungry?

I never had any food problem in Nethack, but it's still a nice addition. I think adding a hunger component may add some difficulty, especially if you lower a bit the quantity of food you find. Hungry Diggles will then become fearsome. Maybe it would need to add "rotting" to food, too. Like cheese becoming older.

Old school mode = no map, hunger and thirst. Enemies twice as tough. All the common *Band uniques added with all the horrible game breakingly strong effects too. (This includes Demogorgon. He can teleport to your location instantly every turn, hits to disease you and if you do not cure the disease in a few turns, you die. He killed so many characters in my Nethack/Slash'Em games that I probably spent over a year refining my technique only to die the same damned way every other character for years afterwards. I still am pissed about that monster alone.)

No one who considers this game a Roguelike wants what old school really means. I can promise that much.

I was playing TomeNET earlier this evening. All ASCII. Beautifully simplistic, yet the plain text manual is 721 KB. (Very complex game.)

That game is Old School. I have died multiple times to unique named monsters in the Training Tower. The starter dungeon is brutal too. You must write your own macros to do things or you absolutely will die quickly. There is no such thing as a *Best* build. There are good builds, but none are best. Most times when you die, it happens so fast you have to read your log to find how you died.

    Old.

    School.

    Unwanted here.
