Perfect Upgrades?

I haven't played this game much since it was first released, and I'm now replaying through with all the expansions and having tons of fun again.

I always enjoyed the crafting element of the game, so I went with a Clockwork Knight build this time and I'm absolutely loving it. Not much to hate when you can just jump into the middle of a monster zoo and wreck it on level 10, of course.

Anyways, I finally got the recipe for the Clockwork Ravager (was really confused until I figured out you now have to discover a recipe before making it) and decided to make quite a few and go around upgrading them at anvils of Krong.

The problem is I'm getting about 50% bad enchantments, and they're much worse than the good ones. The "good" upgrades might give me a resist or two, and then I get a bad enchantment of -2 armor absorption or -3 magic resistance, which is no good at all.

I'm confused because I've seen pictures like this posted here: http://i.imgur.com/s0LMq.png

How do you get so many upgrades on a weapon without a single negative modifier? Is there some trick to it? If you re-roll an item with the Archeologist skill, do the negative mods disappear? I remember that skill being just as much of a gamble as the anvils, so I'm not sure how to get the Clockwork Ravagers better, it seems like I'm just ruining them with the anvils.

    Thanks.

Something's odd with that. If it was Kronged, why is is still only named "Clockwork Ravager"?

Some items are considered artifacts without the random text, for example the Poncho With No Name. If you use those at the Anvil of Krong, their name won't change. Clockwork Ravager is one of those, and I think any item you craft that gets "random bonus stats" also won't change its name with the anvil of Krong.

I'm pretty sure the picture of that Clockwork Ravager is legit since no one questioned it in the original thread, but I'm just not sure how you get so many bonuses without any negative mods.

I think I remember this, if you have an item with an artifact level, but no bonuses, when you use Krong, all those bonuses are then assigned, along with the Krong bonus/penalty.

So if you buy from Brax (or make/loot) a CR, then Krong it, it has 6 artifact levels worth of bonuses that get assigned. There was a thread on this., I think.

This has been discussed many times before and there are many examples of incredible items through repeated Krong'ings.

Most famously, Maslech, the Eater of Beatings, a hat what Fax made*

    As seen here: http://community.gaslampgames.com/threads/grpd-melee-dredmor-kill-3.2267/#post-19462

    The process is very simple.

1.) Be very lucky/favored by Krong

2.) Take Archaeology and max it out

3.) Pick your favorite item and smash it on every anvil..... twice.

4.) If Krong ever shows his displeasure, just check the translation until all the bad things go away.

If you follow these 4 easy steps, you too can have incredible Maslech'esque headgear, or footgear or whatever.

*For further information just run a search for 'Maslech' on these forums. It appears 123 times... 124 as of this post. Seriously.
