Several authoritarian regimes (China, Russia, the United Arab Emirates, etc.) are currently pushing to change International Telecommunications Regulations treaties in ways that would give them more ability to tamper with the internet beyond their own borders. Please sign a petition asking the rest of the world's governments not to give in to their bullshit:

So long as what they do remains limited to their nations, they are welcome to do whatever they want. But once they cross the border to another nation and start messing with stuff, that can be construed as an act of war.

US has already pretty much vetoed this.

The petition doesn't really adequately explain what's going on, but I found this article helpful to get a better idea of exactly what is being proposed.

You know who "Owns" the Internet? No-one.

We pay for a service that provides access to other services. That is all. The Internet itself is not the service. The Internet is the whole of the services combined in the chaotic way they are. Politics and governments have no ownership nor authority to take those services that make the Internet, nor to do anything whatsoever to them unless they violate a law that applies to the real world.

The solution is to leave it alone. Service providers will adapt and everyone will benefit in their own limited ways. The more hands in the basket, the less goodies there will be when you go looking at what crumbs are left for you.
