    Let's see...
1.) Not yet stated. There will be trade between the colony and the outside world, but whether or not prices rise and fall based on supply and demand hasn't been mentioned at all.

2.) There is an invisible bulletin board that your citizens will refer to in order to start a job or task, you do not assign it directly to them. The economy within the colony itself hasn't been clarified yet, so how a particular citizen comes to own food, housing, or other accessories isn't known; let alone if items will be more or less expensive based on rarity or necessity.

3.) Not sure. There hasn't been any announcement about colony currencies, so there's no way of knowing if workers get paid a salary.

4.) You are a Bureaucrat of the Empire, so you're assigned by the State. Not that it has much effect on how you decide to play the game.

Clockwork Empires is based more around creating an interesting player-driven narrative than being a 1 for 1 economic simulator, so don't be surprised if extensive supply and demand models aren't ultimately implemented.

based on http://www.gaslampgames.com/2012/09/25/an-industrial-logistics-simulation-for-everyone/ I'd say the economy will work in a similar manner to truely excellent Pharaoh - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pharaoh_(video_game)

That is the primary reason I like how this is shaping up. I have not played a better city builder since and restrictive / uncontrollable economics (I looking at you, sim city 4, anno 2070) is largely to blame. Throw loads of resources/industries at us! Don't lock any building options for any reason! Make unhappiness have serious penalties! Make tax and trade profitable! Let us screw our selves over! Include fire risk and crime! Include ancient evils!

For what it's worth I always liked the early settlers economy model as well.

Pharaoh was one of the best videogames that no one played, it's true. My wife has played through Pharaoh, Cleopatra, Zeus, Poseidon, and Emperor several times each. They were all just phenomenal games and my wife is just crapping her pants over the fact that Clockwork Empires sounds like it'll be a truly modern and awesome take on the genre. The only hitch is saving up for that computer... :)

Sun Ra is actually my soundtrack at work this week, mainly Night of the Purple Moon but with some Magic City and more dissonant stuff thrown in for good measure.

I don't have a great answer to any of your questions, though, because we're still partly trying to figure it out ourselves. I think you're basically sent out as part of a charter company, so the relationship between the State and the Company is very blurred (as it should be in any corporate oligarchy!) Salaries... are a bit fuzzy.

Well, as long as you don't render every coin as an in-game object that the Citizens have to spend time collecting and moving back and forth to their hovels, then you'll be better off than Dwarf Fortress was with its economy.
