Could we get a rest button in the UI? I play 99% with the mouse, as I have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in my left wrist, so I don't keep it in "keyboard position" and i don't have quick access to rest without taking my right hand off the mouse and reach over to hit the spacebar. It gets a little tiring in combat sometimes when you have to go between resting a turn and attacking, and resting again to let a monster come to you, etc. So is it possible to add a rest button somewhere to click instead of hitting spacebar? Maybe around the portrait near the belt bar?
Have you tried clicking on the tile that you're standing on? If that doesn't work, the devs should make it work.
Well I hadn't tried that, but did tonight, no such luck. But that could be a great way to implement it.
I'd still like it if there were a dedicated resting method so that I don't have to tap the space bar repeatedly in order to try and heal up without allowing newly spawned critters free hits. There might be spare food I could use instead but dammit, I have to save that for exploring!
The devs explicitly wanted to make the primary source of health regeneration food; regeneration is 1 per 13 turns on GR to further stress the point. If you're mashing the spacebar, you're doing it wrong. Other roguelikes have rest buttons because you'd starve if you rested too much. Since there is no starvation in DoD, attrition via respawning monsters is used to push you to the next level. Difficulty settings are even tweaked according to the minimun amounts of food and drink which spawn on each level. If you die because you've run out of food, then you managed your resources improperly and deserved every bit of it. This goes doubly on DM with a base 7 turns/hp and it's as easy as mana in getting up to 1 per turn.
Well said Iccorp2, I think some people forget that this is in fact a rouge-like game sometimes.. It certainly doesn't feel like one at the very least. Also.. you do realize that there are more ways to heal right? You could go into one of the magic trees with healing, make potions via alchemy, use fungi to make FairyWodgers, or resort to Vampirism.
Or go into burglary and simply buy out every possible food item there is in vending machines. Or make a ranged character with magic resistance and stay out of harm's way. Or even take one level of Big Game Hunter and grab some meaty grub, so to say. There really are a lot of ways to heal oneself here, contrary to most roguelikes, where you only had potions and mushrooms (which had random effects and could just as well kill you), and possibly some healing spells if you had a paladin or a priest.
I think you guys misunderstood, what he wants isn't a rest-to-full-health button, but a way to skip a turn without hitting spacebar because he has carpal tunnel syndrome. Clicking on your character should indeed work IMO
We were replying to BDR1985, not Zembar with the opening post. Zembar wants a clickable button to avoid hitting spacebar, while BDR1985 wants an easier way to heal without using food. I think you misunderstood who was being replied to.
As said, I'm not asking for any change to the mechanics. Just an alternate way to activate the "rest a turn" action. Button on the UI, clicking on the player portrait, being able to assign a 4th or 5th mouse button as rest. Something like that. 99% of my play is mouse only. Only times I use the keyboard is to rest, move through a pet that's in the way(and sometimes I'll just kill and resummon /evil ), or move to a door space I don't want to close, and Rest seems to what is used most often out of those. (and the last one is only an issue in combat, otherwise I can just click an extra space away)
Does middle mouse currently do anything at all? If not, here's a glovepie snippet: Key.Space = Mouse.MiddleButton Edit: I have a Razer Naga, so that or the WarMouse Meta I recommend.
