    This unfortunately just happened:
I'm on level 9, so I have two spare "Royal Beatdowns" in my inventory in preparation for Dredmor's attacks that corrupt weapons. These two maces are plain versions of the two enchanted ones being used, one of which has been enchanted about 20 times, and probably had more negative than positive mods, but it was still a beast. I find a new item and try to send it to the museum. Because it's a mace-class weapon, and (evidently) not a proper artifact, it auto-equips. This swaps out my beast of a beatdown mace into my inventory... somehow stacking on top of a plain version. I go to split them (using the awkward method of placing the stack in a crafting window), and they both come out plain.
All those reworked anvils of Krong, gone!

My recommendation is that maybe when "It belongs in a museum!" is selected as the skill being used, disable the RMB function of equipping an item. This should be safe against accidental attempts at selling when trying to equip, due to the dialog confirmation box that comes up.

    Sad, sad, day.
