Rune of exploding at some baddies near the periphery of my vision followed by lateral movement using the keyboard, holding down the key (latest was to the left, though I believe I've seen it to the right as well) sometimes results in a freeze/lockup wherein the character animation never "completes" and instead just continues "walking" in place. No keyboard commands function. Cannot exit. Cannot Save. Mouseovers of the HUD elements (quickbar, character, inventory, etc...) all still work, however, mouse clicks do nothing. Eventually, the character animation changes to the handheld-playing idle mode, but there is still no response from any keyboard or mouse. I've seen this happen on both Windows 7/64bit and MacOSX, so I'm quite certain it's an internal logic issue, not a quirk of the system. I do not have a save file, since this can happen at any time, and I'm not real inclined to save and reload every time I'm about to use a rune of exploding. My best guess as a software developer is that it has something to do with filling up an input queue somehow (due to holding down the key) and a deadlock within the "turn completion" code.
I note also, that there is a just-dead baddie (a gnome in case it matters, though I think I've seen this with others too) which has a not-quite-complete death animation. The flames are still flickering, but he is stuck in that not-quite-collapsed to the floor pose in this cropped screenshot: So, thinking about this more, perhaps it's a deadlock between the personal end-of-turn code and the death animations? What's curious is why I've only ever seen it with the rune of exploding and lateral movement holding down the key. It really does feel it must be tied somehow to the input queue. This has probably happened to me ~5-7 times now with various different characters on multiple different computers and it's finally annoyed me enough that I registered to submit this bug report.
One more note: I couldn't say if any of the prior lockups were this case or not, but here, that gnome is one of a group of quest targets, and after his death, 2 remain.
Thanks for the indepth report, we're aware of this but I'll let Nicholas know of your findings. It may help him pinpoint what's happening.
Sorry if this is a duplicate. I did a simple forum search for this problem to see if it had been previously reported, but I guess I didn't use the right terms.
