So I came back to see the YHTNTEP and thought I'd load up my character on floor 20 or so and play. I downloaded the expansion via steam and saw the pretty new splash screen and then my saves weren't there. This game is notorious for eating my saves and generally being terrible and so I went into my backup folder and copied them into the save game folder. For reference, these directories are : My Documents\Gaslamp Games\Dungeons of Dredmor and then my backup is \Savebackup inside that one. Boot the game and the saves arn't there. My first thought is that the save folder has moved somewhere, but no. I copy my save game backups into the folder and as the game boots they are deleted from the folder. So I basically can't play this game anymore?
Steam? Use -nukesteamcloud before copying your saves back. Steam is bitchy like this. I strongly suggest making a shortcut to the executable itself and running the game launched directly rather than using Steam to ruin your gameplay. (No, this is not unique to this game, nor the expansion. Steam's Cloud storage does this like you would likely not believe.)
Yeah, Steam Cloud on every other game offers me a "Download the files in the Cloud" or "Retain local save data." The difference here being that the game simply wipes my saves. It doesn't offer me anything and nor does it copy the saves I know are in the steam cloud, I tested on my laptop and got to floor 4.
Make a shortcut to your DoD copy instead of running it through Steam. Because, for some crazy reason, Steam randomly decides to synchronize the saved data for DoD in the wrong direction, resulting in your saves being ravaged instead of copied to the backup folder. And the backup folder is local, so nuking Steam might not help. Edit: I hate you guys... But only a little...
Yeah, it's a good idea to just globally disable the Steam Cloud especially if you only use one machine. Fun fact: Disabling the cloud does not affect achievements. as far as i know
