I had a character in progress, but got the itch to try new skills. Made a new character, played it a while. Save&Quit. Played it the next day. Save&Quit. Went to load it today, and it's gone, I only have the save from my previous character. This is the second time this has happened recently. The previous time it happened, I was quite ill, and assumed that in my delirium I hit Just Quit and somehow ignored all the warnings. This time, I KNOW I hit Save&Quit, because I never wanted to lose a character again. Yet I did. Can I provide any information on how to track down what caused this, because it is totally sapping my interest in playing, if my characters will be randomly deleted.
Appears to be the SteamCloud syncing acting up. Play the game out of Steam by running the executable instead.
Ok, I'll definitely try that! I'm not accustomed to Steam games being playable without running through Steam, but as I only care about Steam as a game delivery device, I'm more than happy to use it Steam-free. Thanks for the advice!
Oddly enough, I got the same problem (on a Mac) and it stopped when I switched to launching via Steam instead of launching the launcher.
Was Steam running when you launched it outside of Steam? (I am unsure exactly how that works, or even if it is the same on Mac as on PC.)
Nope, it usually opens up at the start and I force-quit it. Now I just keep it so that Steam never opens. I've never experienced it, but i've only played one run through since then and it only seems to happen on levels 1 and 2. Which is odd, because I swear I saw that bug fixed on a changelog.
Bugs even when fixed have a tendency to happen again and again for different, unknown-at-the-time reasons. Steam is a weird thing.
Welp, it happened on DL4 literally just now. Luckily it rolled back only to a small part before my last save, but still XD
I just had this happen too. Extremely disappointed. I had put a lot of time into this guy, now I feel like anytime I spend playing this game is a huge waste. What do you mean, "play it outside of steam"? I generally double click on the icon, and if steam asks me to log in I do.
Run dungeons of dredmor.exe from the steamapps/common/dungeons of dredmor folder. Steam won't start when you run that one. It appears like Steam has some issues in other games as well with the Steam Cloud saves.
But you know, this bug is really weird, it's as if Steam randomly decided to download the data from backup instead of uploading it to the backup folder when the game was being shut down. You know, synchronizing it in the wrong direction. And yes, I checked. Because I dislike the fact that it can't learn to change my "last chosen" skill set between playing sessions. And even more amusingly, the backup folder is an offline one, so just having Steam running and not even being connected isn't likely to solve it.
I can't begin to say how many times the Auto-save feature has saved my bacon. I can only wonder how many fewer fans this game would have without it.... Everyone would have rage quit left!
THIS BUG IS GAME BREAKING. At minimum I would like to see a STICKY on a CONFIRMED workaround posted by a Developer. A game that puts so much importance on survival and having a lucky run, it's devastating to have all your saves deleted. I shouldn't need to manually save save files in 2012. Come on guys! At least introduce some .bak files in case the .sav gets messed up. It's elementary. HURRY.
My crazy rant about how awful Steam is does not seem so far fetched now, does it? Steam is ruining stuff for many games by playing this game of Cloud storage without a reliable Cloud. DoD is not alone in this regard either. Steam is the common condition amongst the plethora of games with Cloud saves and settings going poof. For now the best fix is to run the executable outside of Steam as Daynab says and backup your saves before exiting the game if there is a chance you will accidentally open the game *IN* Steam next time. (Just as a precaution.)
I honestly do not know. I never run Steam except to download the latest version of the game. Sorry. Anyone have a definitive answer?
I suppose you haven't read the posts higher up there, so I'll repeat again. The backup folder is an offline one, so just having Steam running and not even being connected isn't likely to solve it. And I don't have Steam cloud on, so yeah...
