Monsters used to attack me. Now they wait till I walk up to them and stab them. There is no challenge.

Yes, it's annoying. Was that a suggestion?

That's not the problem, it's a free crit. The annoying part is when large groups of monsters start to run away from you :p
As soon as you hit one mob, all the others close to it should attack you anyway.

Suggestion by inference I suppose. I suggest that they are removed.

Also, I repeatedly hit a bat in (presumably) the back, to which it had no response. I play on hard but it feels like I'm playing on easy now.

I like the new stealth mechanics but I agree, I'd like to see more realistic aggro. At least a little nerf so that monsters don't "forget" you are there in two turns, because right now if you have 50 sneak and a good ranged ability you are basically unstoppable.

I like it, but monster sensitivity should scale as you get deeper... or something.

I think the best fix here would be to just add a sound mechanic, either a very simple one (monsters fighting attracts attention if it's not a stealth kill) or a more complex thing where different gear has different sthealthiness and all that.

    Suggestions:

    1) Give the player a Presence Radius; a combination of appearance, noise, smell, etc.
    2) Give enemies a Detection Radius (cardioid shaped?); a combination of sight, hearing, smelling, etc.
    3) When an enemy's Detection Radius overlaps the Presence Radius, the enemy is alerted.
    4) Stealth reduces the player's Presence Radius.
    5) Player's activities reduce Stealth temporarily?
    6) Projectiles and ranged effects have their own Presence Radius?
    7) Alerted enemies within their Detection Radius trigger other enemies?

Some equipment reduces the player's Stealth. Therefore it would make sense the player's initial Stealth is larger than zero OR the game allows negative Stealth which increases the Presence Radius.

You guys are asking a lot of additional programming. Lets first see how fixing all the monsters that are spawn as peaceful first affects gameplay.

It affects gameplay so that when I walk into a monster zoo, everyone is alerted. If I want to lure them out, they return passive and I have to get into the room to get kills.
