Smithing, How do I use this skill?

How does one use the smithing skill? I often find stationary smiths in the environment, but left or right clicking them doesn't seem to activate it. Sometimes I find disposable smithing presses but those have limited uses. I would like to be able to make wpns/armor and melt down materials.

You can only use the Smithing Skill if you actually took it at character creation. If you did you should start the game with a "my first anvil" and a disposable ingot press. Both items are used by left clicking them. It'll open up a smaller inventory box for the items. You put the raw ingredients in the box and hit "smith" or "smelt"

In these secondary boxes will also be a "Recipe" button which shows the various combinations of materials to make specific items.

Thanks Orion. What are the smithing stations in the environment for then if you start with smithing tools? Also if you mentally memorize a formula (or check the wiki) can you craft it without having found the recipe?

The smithing stations are just to look nice (seriously). They also usually contain ingredients.

You don't have to have the recipe in game in order to craft. You have to be careful sometimes though, as the game will try to craft the first thing it can. This can lead to making daggers, when you want armor. I've only had this happen once or twice though, and one time I had the recipe messed up anyhow. The only way to assuredly prevent this is to have the recipe selected in game.

Thanks again guys. One more question regarding smithing. Is the only to convert a raw ore to a ingot to use a disposable ingot press?
